If you can’t beat ‘em, hire ‘em.

That appears to be the direction for the University of Texas, who on the day it officially fired former UTEP coach Rodney Terry, is reportedly set to hire Xavier coach Sean Miller, whose team eliminated the Longhorns in a First Four game in Dayton, Ohio.

The Austin American-Statesman's Cedric Golden first reported the news.

Miller went 120-47 in five seasons at Xavier from 2005-09 before going to Arizona, where he went 302-109 in 12 seasons before getting fired in 2021 in a corruption scandal.

He returned to Xavier in 2022 and coached there for three years, going 94-76. His last win was against Texas in a First Four game, his last loss two days later to Illinois in the first round.

Miller was reportedly on the wish list of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte in 2023, but Terry, an interim coach at Texas after Chris Beard was fired, led Texas to the Elite Eight and was retained as a full-time head coach.

After two seasons he was fired.

"This was a very difficult decision and one that we put a great deal of thought, consideration and discussion into as we evaluated where we are," Del Conte said in a statement, adding that "Coach Terry has led our program in a first-class manner, and we've accomplished some great things."
