So i'm watching the derby coverage today and starting to ask myself why i've never made these - i've had them sparingly before and am a huge bourbon fan

recently i've been mixing old fanshions and manhattans with rye (well at least my variation of the old fashioned, which is probably a lot closer to the truth than a lot of them out there, but would probably still upset a purist....... i don't care, they taste incredible)

so i was arunning around after the derby and picked up a bottle of elijah craig - far from my everyday bottle, but one that I thought would blend well with the tastes

i made some mint simple syrup and cut a straw so I could keep a sprig of mint elevated out of the glass - just mixed my first one as the syrup is near ready enough and it's fan freaking tastic - i think i found my summer sip

Nice!

I had my first mint julep today. It was pretty yummy. Definitely different.

i don't think you can pwi after two sips - but it looks like i stopped short of the food forum and just decided to discuss liver pickling devices in body & health - mods feel free to move

jersey - the world of whiskey is an amazing one - about all I drink anymore is beer or whiskey with some occasional wine

poured a glass of rum the other night - but really only drink rum like 4 days a year any more

I'm a big whiskey fan. Love the Irish ones ... Jamey and Paddys mostly. Love Jack. Went to the distillery in Tennessee. Funny thing is they can make it there but they can't sell it cause Lynchberg is a dry town. All those great whiskey smells on the tour and you can't even buy a glass. :(

I'll move this to the food section. :)

sweet - i skipped the jack distillery and hit dickel when I was in TN and it was the same deal

they had a special license where they could sell special edition bottles - but it was a shady side room off the traditional gift shop - had a blast though

you should try Red Breast Irish Whiskey sometime - probably one of my favorite irish whiskeys - well worth the cost

The Mint julip is great, but try the rye smash! Rye Whisky, muddled mint, lemon juice and simple syrup, over ice. Its better!

i'm just a lemon juice away from this - although my bottle of rittenhouse BIB is slowly fading away...........

think instead of muddling in the glass I could just use my mint simple syrup (basically simple syrup that is put hot into a container with some bruised mint and then allowed to cool and soak in)?

also what kind of proportions go with that?

I'm currently pissed off at mint julips. I couldn't find fresh mint in three different stores yesterday.
