Awesome piece of writing. I will take a 24-17 Cardinals win this time as well.

A great read. As I move onto the 18th hole of life, it's great to look back and "remember". Also, a nice way to start celebrating my granddaughter's fifth birthday. Ashley shares this date with a hero of mine, Stan "the man" Musial. Mitch, thanks for the memories.

Mitch, great story, it took me back to that era of Maris and Mantle, Y. A. Tittle, and the Footall Giants. I used to listen to the NFL Cards over the air via radio station KMOX. I lived in Flushing N. Y. then and the only way I got to hear the Cards play was over my car radio (56 Chevy). I would sit outside my apartment and if conditions were right, hear the greats from the past play until the game. I still listen to them over the radio once in awhile when the game gets a little too stressful for me but love watching them on the big screen when we move the ball downfield. Thanks again for sharing your memories with us.

They don't come any better than Delano,PA's Stan "the Man." Ahhhh, the boyhood memories.

BTW, excellent piece Mitch! Finally, this ship is back on course.

really good read Mitch!

was that game 17 years ago the game in which we lost 20-19, blowing a 19-10 lead with just over 3 minutes left against Hostetler when Parcells had the gates opened to switch the wind in his favor so they could hit a 47 yarder to beat us on the last play?

Great article!

Makes me wonder how many Cards fans chose their allegiance at or after a Giants game.

I saw the Redbirds lay a smack down on the G Men in '93. I was pumped, I was a Giants fan, my parents had been in AZ for two years and it was my first (and only) opportunity to see Simms and Taylor. What I saw was Ron Moore and the Cardinals D absolutely destroy my then favorite team.

The performance planted a seed in my mind, "maybe I could pull for this team." When I moved to AZ, I became a diehard fan and I haven't looked back. With the success our Birds have experienced this year, you have to believe they've converted a legion of new fans.

That article makes me think back to the early 70's when the Cards played in St. Louis and I became a fan even though I had lived in Dallas my whole life. I look of the bird on their helmets and their all white uniforms turned me into a lifetime supporter. I remember my dad and I fighting every time the Cards and Cowpies played at Busch Stadium and it seemed every game would go down to the final minutes no matter the Cards or Boys records. With every score the Cards would make I proudly would run to my room, grab my Cards pennant and run back into the living room and taunt my dad until his face would begin to boil. And to this day, I STILL hate the thought of "America's Team"!!! The 1998 playoff game was the greatest day of my life. The ending hasn't been written yet because I know before I pass the Cards will win a championship!!! GO BIG RED:newcards:

We all have our own stories. Mine started here in Chicago in the early 60's. I was about 10 when my Dad would take me to the local tavern because they had a sattelite dish and was able to televise the Bears home games. He only went to the tavern if the Cards were in town.
Then he started taking me to St. Louis for a couple of road trips each year. We also would travel about 75 miles out of Chicago and rent a hotel room so we could watch the Cards on tv.

It's sure is funny how deep this passion runs.

Mitch, I'm speechless buddy... You and I hail from the same "neighborhood". As such, your Field of Dreams experiences hits me as true as a Tyson left hook to the jaw!
I still remember my first visit to The house that Ruth built as well... It has a way of imprinting on your brain so that all these years later, it still seems as if it happened just last weekend.

The "Full Circle" you speak of is stunning... I now live in AZ and I am so proud to say that my Field of Dreams is in Glendale. Really couldn't say that before Whiz got here. But man is UoP Stadium (The Toaster) one of the loudest and most fun football experiences one can ever enjoy - including all of the pre and post game festivities!!

My friend, you are indeed a gifted writer. Thank you for bringing me back to a time and to experiences I had not thought about in decades.
And thank you for so perfectly capturing the events soon to unfold this coming Sunday.
I will be there as usual. Win or lose I know I won't be able to speak well on Monday. My legs will be sore... My head most likely a bit achy as well...

Well done sir... This is going to be GREAT!!

Sam Etchiverry played under Pop Ivey, I believe, and I remember a game against the Giants where we scored from inside the ten, by calling and completing a screen pass. At least that is how I remember the radio call.

Correctamundo!! Cardinals won that game...first game he appeared in. He wound up with a sore wing and did not last too many more years. Sort of OT back in those times one had to go up to (say) New Haven CT to get a look at a NYG home game...always went up (with my dad) for Cardinal games.
