I am dropping my qwest and getting COX after some issues. I am looking to get a modem from a friend who had their service disconnected, they still owe cox money. Will them owing money affect me using that modem?

I do not think so. We were having problems with our Internet connection earlier this month. Cox had originally supplied the cable modem and we thought that was the issue. So we told them to bring us a replacement.

Their response was that we had purchased the modem, so it was on us to buy another one.

Bottom line: If Cox isn't claiming ownership of the equipment, I don't think they can block you from using it.
