Mohamed Salah has signed a new £20 million-a-year contract at Liverpool, bringing the formal end to epic negotiations.

After a breakthrough in talks with sporting director Richard Hughes earlier this week, the attacker put pen to paper on a two-year extension, keeping him at Anfield until 2027.

From the outset, it was evident all parties wanted to reach an agreement to keep the legendary figure at the club.

Liverpool took the position that whatever deal was reached could not compromise their financial model as they look to strengthen the squad this summer.

They could not afford to pay Salah or any of their stars the kind of salaries they might have been offered elsewhere.

It is understood the Egyptian’s deal, therefore, is on similar terms to his last, which was worth up to £400,000 a week inclusive of bonuses and performance triggers, which he tends to activate by regularly scoring at least 20 goals a season.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website, Salah said: “Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football

“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.

“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
