Does anyone have a killer mojito recipe?

I made my first ones this weekend with mixed results. I believe in using the freshest ingredients, so I did the following;

In a shaker I added;

grounded some fresh mint in a mortar and pestile to get it going
ice
3 oz Bacardi rum
juice of one lime
1 T of simple syrup (made from boiling and cooling 2 parts sugar and 1 part water)

Shake and topped with club soda. The only club soda I had expired 2/08, so I think that might have been the problem.

Just buy this! Surprisingly it makes a damn good mojito and all you have to do is add the rum! Its about 4 bucks a bottle!

Last summer when these were all the rage, my wife and I experiemented with making these. I didn't like them because they were a tad sweet, I'm not really into sweet drinks. We tried the mixes as they started coming out and they weren't any better. We did find that a dark rum like Myers worked better than a light rum, but it's all about preference

We're now a Vodka/Gin and tonic household with a mix of Blue Moon, Budweiser Select and Miller Light

Smash the mint in the glass with the ice. It will make all the difference in the world.

Agreed...muddling is the key to making a Mojito so you get all the flavor out of the mint.

Some friends were over for dinner the other night and one had just got back from San Paulo with some Cachaca. So we had Caipirinhas....basically just muddled lime, cachaca, and simple syrup. Highly recommmend them as a good summer drink.

I found Cachaca at BevMo the other day...I imagine Sportsmans or AJs has it in Phoenix.
