According to Variety, Steve Zaillian has signed on to adapt Michael Lewis' nonfiction bestseller "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game," and David Frankel is attached to direct. The Columbia Pictures project is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Brad Pitt.

The book's subject is Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, who assembled a contending baseball club on a shoestring budget by employing a sophisticated computer-based analysis to draft players.

Michael De Luca is producing alongside Rachael Horovitz.

Stan Chervin wrote an earlier draft based of the book, which Sony optioned in 2004. "Moneyball" was first published by W. W. Norton in 2003.

Moneyball

Studio: Columbia Pictures (Sony)
Director: Bennett Miller
Screenwriter: Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some strong language)
Website: Moneyball-movie.com

Plot Summary: Based on a true story, "Moneyball" is a movie for anybody who has ever dreamed of taking on the system. Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A's and the guy who assembles the team, who has an epiphany: all of baseball's conventional wisdom is wrong. Forced to reinvent his team on a tight budget, Beane will have to outsmart the richer clubs. The onetime jock teams with Ivy League grad Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) in an unlikely partnership, recruiting bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and win games. It's more than baseball, it's a revolution – one that challenges old school traditions and puts Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he's tearing out the heart and soul of the game.

I said this before, I'll say it again: How did they not call that book Beane Ball? Hello?

Keith Law gave this a poor review. He mentioned that he didn't like the portrayal of scouts but also gave some good reasons cinematically. I'm still going to see this because I think part of his issue is he knows how a front office truly works but it was interesting to read his review.

I saw it, liked it, even though it was slow but then again, it was a movie about American league baseball so I was impressed that it was just 2 hours instead of 6. :)

On one hand, it was very slow and the end was perplexingly dark and depressing.

On the other hand, it gave a great insight into the world of baseball, their scouts and their attitudes. We have even seen evidence of this over the course of this season with the Dbacks. "Baseball Guys" have doubted the Dbacks all season and keep listing "old school" reasons as to why we were going to inevitably fail.

Overall, I liked it. Solid baseball film.

I just rented this. Certainly worth the rental. It was entertaining and even though a true story and you know the outcome you still root for the guys. Especially Hatteberg. The movie was about the process and seemed to sell out the coach for that season.

But I don't understand the awards talk for Pitt and Hill. The movie was good, their performances were not great IMO.

I seem to like almost anything that Aaron Sorkin has a hand in, and this movie was no exception. Very similar to The Social Network.

Liked it much better than TSN. And I take back what I ever said against Billy B. Good job. Good movie.

I'm the opposite. I thought the movie was really good, but the acting was great. I loved the conversations. Pitt was fantastic as always and Hill & Hoffman were great supporters.

Liked it.

Wasn't DVD purchase-worthy though.

I get it for Hill. Not so much for Pitt.
