Pretty cool article. Evidently all those post apocalyptic movies that show the moon blowing up and destroying civilization might not be accurate.

I don't know about that. We've kind of gotten used to that big lump over the years. It blowing up would be a fairly large deal.

But I do find it very interesting that another factor deemed necessary for the formation of life has been removed or at least lessened from the equation.

Well I was referring to all the science fiction stories etc. that show that if the moon explodes or is damaged all would be doom and gloom for the earth.

Yeah, I got that. The Earth itself would probably be eventually be fine, everything that evolved while the moon existed, likely not so much.

I thought the moon had more impact but for example the article states the Sun has just as much impact on our tides as the moon does. It also indicated that much of natures evolution was more of an adjustment to the moon versus it actually being necessary.

Pretty interesting stuff. Although I admit, we shouldn't mine the moon until it explodes to test the theory. :D

Doesn't the moon control the tides with its gravitational pull? Wouldn't that affect the ecosystem in the oceans & what not?

According the article the Sun has just as much to do with the tides as the moon. So it sounded like without the Moon our cycles might be different but we would still have cycles.

I'm going to put the moon on ignore if we don't need it.
