YAAWWWWN!!!

With things getting slow I have thought about how many different options the Cardinals have at #5.

1. The best scenario is that the Cardinals get Joe Thomas at #5. That would be perfect.

2. OR The Cardinals trade up to #2 for Joe Thomas. They swap #1 picks with Detroit, and throw Bryant Johnson in with the trade to make it happen. I have no problem putting LeRon McCoy at #3.

3. OR The Cardinals trade down with Houston for a 3rd & Vonta Leach and draft Levi Brown.

4. The Cardinals stay at #5 and draft Alan Branch. Why? Cause with Watson, Branch, Dockett, and Clancy we end up having some SERIOUS depth and destruction at DT. Look at the Vikings and Pat Williams, and Kevin Williams. To big bodies in the middle of the defense that destroy the run.

No need for Branch with scenerio #4. We have serious depth issues at DE. Our DT tackle is just under the WR position in terms of depth.

We need Anderson or Adams if we plan on drafting a DLineman.

Thomas could drop to 5 easy.

But trade up to get him?

Yeah, we've taken a tackle with the second overall pick.

I know I'm just being a silly willy but I don't want to go on that train ride again.

This one is my favorite .. picking up a proven FB and a 3rd round pick makes this work .. the more I read about Brown the more I like him ...

Won't happen if Thomas is there. otherwise it makes alot of sense. Maybe if we get a couple of 3rds, one this yr. one next , it would be inticeing.

Bryant Johnson is a great player but why would the Lions do that? If we use the value chart there is a difference on 900 point between #2 and #5 overall. That means that Bryant Johnson should be worth the #18 pick overall. Does anyone think he is THAT much worth?

Isn't that about where he was drafted? :sarcasm:

I want to stay put unless we get a good payback for dropping.

I sit at 5 and take Thomas if he drops, then I take who ever is the better player between Anderson & Branch.

1. Bill Bidwill won't (IMO) move up and pay #2 money.
2. I thought the Houston FB was a FA.

I guess we will never stop hearing the "Bidwill is cheap" line.

I tend to agree Rugby -- at this point, this much seems known about the top five:

1. The three most likely players to be there at #5 (in order of likelihood) seem to be: Quinn, Peterson and Thomas.

2. I dont think there will be teams outside the top four trading into the top four -- there are really good matches in the top four between need and player available.

3. If Thomas is there, obviously take him.

4. The Cards will get offers if Quinn is there with Minny, Miami and Houston all interested.

5. If Peterson is there -- there might be offers from Houston and GB. GB at #12 is a little low and the Cards may end up missing on Brown, Anderson, Branch , etc. As I have posted before, unless somebody offers a smokin deal, I take Peterson.

How about this scenario: trading the #5 pick to the Bears for their #31, #37 and their 5th rounder.

With the multiple needs the Cardinals have...AND...the depth of this draft, having picks #31, #37 and #38 could garner the Cardinals three potential starters at T, OLB, and CB...for example:

#31: T Joe Staley, Central Michigan. In many ways, Staley is the kind of athlete you want at LT...he's got the best feet of any LT in the draft and he plays a physical style. IMO, he is just as good a pro prospect as Joe Thomas and is tougher than Thomas.

#37: OLB Brandon Siler, Florida. Siler is such a great athlete that he'd be natural to play SLB in the NFL, due to his combination of speed and tenacity. He played inside at Florida, but many of the scouts believe his game is better suited for the outside in the pros, especially because of his rare ability to blanket RBs and TEs in coverage.

#38: CB Daymeion Hughes, California. This guy has a knack for playing the football, which no Cardinal CB has had since Aeneas Williams left to play for the Rams. Plus, he's an asset as a punt returner. He just improved his 40 time at his pro day, running a 4.5...but, it's his instincts that could make him a very good pro CB.

#69: OLB Buster Davis, Florida St. Will slide because he lacks height, but Davis is as sure a tackler as there is in this draft. He would also be a special teams demon.

#104: RB Gary Russell, Minnesota. Compares well to Marion Barber...but slid off the radar screen because he was academically inelligible in 2006. He's quick to the hole and tough to bring down...and, best of all, has breakaway speed.

#135: T Renardo Foster, Louisville. Had an outstanding senior year following back and knee injuires that kept him out of the lineup in 2004 and 2005. All 2006 Big East LT-First team. He's big, strong and agile...but teams will be wary of his history of injuries.

#161: WR/PR Yamon Figurs, Kansas St. Intriguing return specialist...who has a great first move and burst in the open field.

#199: DE Mkristo Bruce, Washington St. Because of subpar stopwatch speed (5.1) and a somewhat disappointing senior year, Bruce's stock has been falling. But...he's a great prospect to take a gamble on in round seven because he is a relentless pass rusher.

Please add to the list:

Graves is an idiot
The Cardinals Suck

If the people who continue to write these were Yankee fans they probobly would add to that "ARod Sucks" and boo him whenever he gets up to the plate.

.

While the trade value charts arent set in stone --

the #5 pick has a value of 1700 pts

Your proposed compensation from the Bears works out to 1150 pts or so--

a difference of 550 pts, or the value of a high second round pick

no thanks

BAH!

What do the Detroit Lions know!?!

They are talking about giving Josh McCown a shot at QB!

Maybe the trade will work if we offer them Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace

This may have been posted already but Kiper has us taking Thomas with the #5 pick in his latest first round mock. He also has Staley going at the end of the first round to the Ravens.

In my way of thinking, the trade value chart is way over-rated...just as most of the top ten prospects in this draft are way over-rated, especially when teams have to pay ridiculous salaries for players that (a) don't deserve them; (b) are not that much better than other players that could be had in round two and three.

The best value every year in the draft is in the first ten picks of the second round...because every year first-round prospects fall there and can be signed for far less money.

Consider this: what would you rather have...

Draft A: OR Draft B?

1. T Thomas
2. LB Burgess
3. CB Bennett
4. RB Russell
5. T Foster
7. DE Bruce

Draft B

1. T Staley
2a. LB Siler
2b. CB Hughes
3. LB Davis
4. RB Russell
5a. T Foster
5b. WR/PR Figurs
7. DE Bruce

I really like your first four picks. a couple of questions. Lets say for arguments sake Staley isn't there and neither is Hughes, oh what the heck lets say Siler too. What's the backup plan? When would you pull this trade, at our pick or do you draft say Thomas and then wield him?

Finally how do you compare Russell to Lorenzo Booker of FSU?

Mitch --

go back in history in and look at the success rate (however you want to define it) of the top of the first round and the top of the second round --

or said another way -- give me the top ten picks of the first round over the last five years to construct a roster, you can have the top 20 picks of the second round to do the same -- the first round roster will be far superior to the second.

I'm in agreement with you. Not sure who is better between Anderson and Branch but would trust in the Card's draft board.
