Pac 10 schools lost out on 3 kids who all picked North Carolina last week.
John Henson 6'10" from Texas picked UNC first. USC had been all over him early but at the end UCLA, Texas and UNC were his final 3. Skinny guy but really a late bloomer very athletic, long, talented kid, sort of blew up this summer. Great get for UNC.
About a month ago Mao and I were discussing the rumor that UNC was suddenly very much in the Wear twins recruitment. They play for Mater Dei, juniors, about 6'10", they'd been considered strong leans to UCLA forever. Their dad played for Donny Daniels(UCLA assistant) and their current coach Gary McKnight is the father of Clay McKnight the video coordinator at UCLA. Everyone just assumed they were going to be Bruins.
The funny thing is most UCLA fans including me didn't want them, skinny kids, very soft, they play like wings, face up, shoot jumpers, don't bang etc. UA was also hot after them I don't recall if Mao liked them or not but a month ago I told him I hope the rumor is true I'd love for them to go to UNC so UCLA gets someone else. Sure enough they verballed late last week to UNC. Even their dad seemed surprised he was quoted as saying he'd expected they'd wait to announce.
I'm still not sure why Howland liked them and it's never a good thing when UNC can come into Pac 10 country and take 2 kids that Pac 10 schools wanted, but frankly if UCLA is able to get Reeves Nelson I'm fine with it, and if they somehow get Brendan Lane too I think they'll be much better than the Wears who are just too soft. Would've liked Henson though.
We'll see how it pans out this whole '09 class is crazy, the best player in the class is Renardo Sidney and the only school in America still recruiting him is USC. UCLA already lost their top target from the class, Hollis Thompson, to Georgetown and now lose 3 more to UNC.
