Mosi Tatupu dies at 54

Former NFL player Mosi Tatupu, the father of Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu, has died.

Mosi Tatupu was only 54.

Per the Honolulu Star Bulletin, the cause of death is currently not known. Tatupu reportedly had been suffering from high blood pressure and other health issues.

A native of Hawaii, Mosi Tatupu's 3,367 career rushing yards stood as a high-school record in the island state for 17 years. Tatupu played for the Patriots from 1978 through 1990, and he retired in 1991 after spending five games with the Rams.

Primarily a special-teams player at the NFL level, Tatupu rushed for 2,415 yards and 18 touchdowns. In 1983, he reached a career high of 578 yards.

Tatupu coached football after his retirement. At the time of his passing, he was the running backs coach at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Mosi Tatupu's passing. He and I worked for a couple of years on the same staff at Foxborough High School, and I must say, even though we worked on opposite ends of building, I was always struck by how classy and charismatic he was. The kids absolutlely loved him...he was wonderfully effective working with kids, not just because he was a Patriots' icon, but because he was guy who genuinely cared about kids and their welfare.

I think the proudest I ever saw him was when his son Lofa was drafted by the Seahawks...it was that year that he left Foxborough to be closer to Lofa. One cannot imagine the pain that Lofa is suffering right now. Far too soon to lose a loving father...God bless all the Tatupu's in what is a dreadfully sad day.

Bummer... As New York fan, I grew you hating the Pats. But Mosi was different. All of us New York fans were compelled to leave Mosi out of the New York - Boston battles. What a great guy and what a teribble loss.
RIP Mosi and god bless the entire Tatupu family... :(
