A 12News sports producer posted a poll the other night on Twitter about an argument they were having in the newsroom about the most iconic play in Arizona sports history. He gave four choices Gonzo's hit in the World Series, Fitz's OT catch and run, the Gar Heard shot and the Jael Mary catch from ASU over USC. The only two that really had any votes were Fitz and Gonzo with Fitz's catch winning the poll.

I'm surprised at the outcome as I voted for Gonzo's hit which was the winning hit in a championship game and came against the greatest closer in MLB history. Fitz's catch as amazing as it was, was only in a divisional playoff game. If that catch happened in the Super Bowl, I would say it was without question but the Cards still have aways to go before that happens.
What do you think it should be?

The base hit to win the World Series has to win

Fitz just put an exclamation point on his Valley legacy with the catch and run

It's definitely Gonzo. Had we stopped Pittburgh in the Super Bowl Larry's catch and run for the go ahead score would be up there above it. But fate didn't have it that way.

But he has the ability to change history this year.

Agreed! You can't compare a playoff win to a championship winning play.

Here was the poll in question. I can only account for Fitz winning the poll based on an extreme recency bias. Fitz's catch was still an incredible play though and if we do win a Super Bowl it will definitely be remembered but probably not as much as the play that does win it for us.

Simple reason that Fitz is running away...A) It's a fresh memory B) Most of the Twitterverse, either wasn't born yet, or was very young, when Gonzo won the WS.

At this point I would put Gonzo #1 and Gar Heard at #2. I have a feeling Fitz will be up there when all is said and done...

It's hard to pick a college play since the state is so divided, but there's always "The Catch" by John Jefferson for ASU against UA in 1975, and the Wildcats sack-fumble in 1985. Is there a play from the Cats' NCAA basketball championship game I'm forgetting?

That Gar Heard play, while it didnt net anything in the end from a game standpoint, meant SO SO SO SO SO SO SO much for Phoenix sports. Its so long ago, but man that shot was EVERYTHING. Has to be number 2 behind Gonzo winning PHX first major championship. No brainer.

Fitz's catch.

when held to the definition of "Iconic"...the other examples fail the test.

you could ask which was the bigger deal for the Phoenix area,...and maybe you get Gonzo..... I watched that world series...didn't even remember he was the last batter...just remember big unit pitching in relief.

to be iconic,...an action or event first must be remembered.....right now everybody remembers Larry's run.

If Fitz would have ran that first catch into the end zone, then it would most def be the most iconic. Still have Gonzo and Fitz catch in the SB ahead of it because of that

If the Cards don't win the Super Bowl, the catch will be forgotten.
If the Cards win the Super Bowl, there will likely be another play that is more memorable.

I've got a bottle opener that plays Greg Schulte's call of Gonzo's game winning hit every time I open a bottle.

I don't even like baseball but I'd say it was Gonzo's hit. Lead to the first (and still only) championship from one of the top 4 sports.

:yeahthat:

Fitz's SB TD was better than this one. This was a divisional game not a WS or SB.

Gonzo by a mile. Against the "unhittable" as well.

What a great World Series, in the shadow of 9/11 too.

I don't even follow baseball, but I remember driving home from swing shift at Lewis prison in Buckeye and had to stop at a gas station and listen to that at-bat on the radio. I also remember yelling and honking my horn when I heard this:

Base hit! Diamondbacks Win! They're the World Champions!"
