The Salton Sea
Cast: Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Goldberg, Luis Guzmán, Doug Hutchison, Anthony LaPaglia, Peter Sarsgaard, Deborah Kara Unger, B.D. Wong, Meat Loaf, Danny Trejo, etc.
Summary: Danny Parker (Val Kilmer) is set adrift in a world where nothing is as it seems. On his journey he befriends slacker Jimmy the Finn (Peter Sarsgaard) and becomes involved in rescuing his neighbor Colette (Debra Kara Unger) from her own demons. Danny is antagonized by undercover narcotics agents (Anthony Lapaglia and Doug Hutchison) and sadistic dealer Pooh Bear (Vincent D'Onfronio).
Trivia:
Vincent D'Onofrio gained 45 pounds and bleached his hair blonde for his role as Pooh-Bear.
Writer Tony Gayton said that the script to this movie was not written to be produced but to be a writing sample, something wild and experimental he could show producers to get work. He was very surprised when Castle Rock wanted to produce it.
Val Kilmer researched his role by spending time with drug abusers in Riverside and the greater Los Angeles area.

I first caught this on tv (cable). I watched it from just after the credits without even knowing what movie it was. Since then, I've seen it a few times. I just like it. Odd characters and an interesting story.
