The Cast: Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Ironside

Director: Brad Anderson

The Story:
Trevor Reznik, a machinist, has lost the ability to sleep. But this is no ordinary insomnia. Trevor has not slept in a year. Fatigue has led to a shocking deterioration of his physical and mental health. Suspicious of his appearance, Trevor’s co-workers first shy away from him, then turn against him after he’s involved in a shop accident that costs a man his arm. They blame Trevor for the accident. He has become a liability to himself and others, and now they want him out.

Plagued with guilt, Trevor’s shame becomes suspicion, then paranoia, when it appears his workmates are conspiring to have him fired –- or worse. First he finds cryptic notes left in his apartment. Next he’s told that a mysterious co-worker involved in the accident doesn’t exist. Are these mysteries part of a plot to drive Trevor mad? Or is it fatigue that’s robbing him of his reason? Determined to find an answer, Trevor investigates the strange occurrences that are turning his world into a sleepless nightmare. Yet the more he learns, the less he wants to know.

Pariah's Take: First off, Christian Bale lost tons of weight for the role--he was down to 120 lbs. Very DeNiro-esque. Not only did he physically get into the role, but I thought he did a pretty good job of acting.

The movie itself was good, but the ending left me a little unsatisfied. I still can't figure out if there was something else I was to read into it (I have an idea of what that might be), or take the ending at face value. There were a lot of layers in the film; I liked that. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The movie list was only up to 203, so that's what I went with. Sorry.

Maybe a mod can change the titles...I can't.

Great movie Pariah. I just saw this last week and I was shocked at how unhealthy Christian Bale looked in this role. My wife read an article where his wife stated she was very worried about him.

The movie hasent gotten very much pub but it was very good in a dark sort of way.

Great Pick!

I just watched it. Bale looked absolutely sick. He said it was such a joke when he tried to run, because his legs weren’t strong enough and he felt like he was going to fall. What’s even more amazing to me than the weight loss is the muscle that he put on for Batman in such a short time after this.

SPOILER

I didn't really get what the big guy with the bald head did in the movie.

I thought of the bald guy as his guilty conscience. Ivan was trying to encourage him to acknowledge what he has done.

Some interesting trivia from IMDB that I didn’t pick up on during the movie:

Many references to "sinister" in both the modern sense ("ominous/evil") and the ancient sense ("left/unlucky"): Both Miller and Ivan have damaged left hands, Ivan is standing on the left in the photo, Ivan's left eye is a bright blue while the other is dark brown, Marie's kitchen is "last door on the left", Stevie's bruise is on the left side of her face, The hangman game progresses from right to left, The lye or bleach is always to the left of whatever sink Trevor uses On three occasions, Trevor encounters a "fork" in the road: in the "Route 666" ride, in the sewer, and when traveling to the airport ("Airport" vs Downtown") - the "left" (sinister) path is always darker and more dangerous, and each time Trevor chooses to follow it except for the last time, he chooses right (downtown, "salvation").

Saw this one tonight on DVD> This movie is everything I like about movies -- a mystery, a morale, and lots of of visual cues about both. I think it's great when a director goes out of his or her way to tell a story with the camera and not just rely on the dialogue to give us everything.

For some reason it just fell flat to me. I think when movies play one note they need to make us think it's the greatest note ever played. Don't think story did enough to make us sympathize with Bale's character. In fact, we weren't sure if we were rooting for him through much of the movie.

Wow, didn't think it was flat, but then again, I saw it awhile ago, so no idea really. I did like it a lot though.

I think knowing what Bale did to get down to that weight made the performance that much better.

The Horrific Story of Christian Bale's Ass While Making The Machinist

http://geektyrant.com/news/the-horrific-story-of-christian-bales-ass-while-making-the-machinist

In a Reddit AMA, Machinist co-star Michael Ironside revealed a story about Bale's ass that is actually kind of horrific:

"I remember on The Machinist, I came to work one day, and we were shooting in Barcelona, Spain, and our trailers were these little Spanish 2-wheeled cabanas that were parked in front of this actual working machine shop. And I heard 'pssst...Michael!' from behind one of the cabanas.

"And I went over, and it was Chris. And he said, 'Can you look at this?' And he turned and dropped his overalls, which he was naked under. And he had lost an INCREDIBLE amount of weight for the character. And he said 'Michael, there's something wrong with my ass, can you have a look?' And the muscles in his ass had literally dropped out of the sockets of his hips. The dignity of the muscles, his ass had literally dropped out of the hips and thigh bones. And I said, 'Hey Chris, your ass has dropped.' And he said, 'What do you mean?' And I said, 'You've stopped losing body fat, and now you're actually losing elasticity of muscles' - I forget the exact medical term for it, but I said, 'You've gone beyond body fat, and now you're into actual muscle tissue and things are being affected.

"And he turned - I wasn't sure how he was going to react - and he turned, and said, 'Cool'"
