Waterworld
Year: 1995
Director: Kevin Reynolds
Writers: Peter Rader and David Twohy
Stars: Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino
IMDB

Tagline:
Beyond the horizon lies the secret to a new beginning.

Summary (stolen from imdb.com):
The polar ice caps have melted, and the earth is covered by water. The remaining people travel the seas, in search of survival. Several different societies exist. The Mariner falls from his customary and solitary existence into having to care for a woman and a young girl while being pursued by the evil forces of the Deacon.

I don't know why this was a flop. I have a feeling a lot of people did not even see it. It may not have lived up to its massive budget and had a few plot issues, but it was still an enjoyable movie for me. Maybe I just like the postapocalyptic/escapist genre of movies more than most people

I liked it, actually. I think the reason it's considered a "flop" is because it was a financial disaster--only in part because of box office sales--the original floating set sank, and with it millions upon millions of dollars in crew time.

I think I remember reading something about how it would have had to outgross that year's equivolent of ET or something. It was doomed for "failure" after that disaster.

Pariah hit it on the head--it was a flop because of the massive amount of money it cost to make the film.

What most people don't know is that the movie technically was NOT a flop, because it eventually made a small profit thanks to international business and home video. But domestically, it most definitely was a flop.

The movie wasn't that bad, but it certainly wasn't good enough to justify making up it's massive cost and the weirdness behind the scenes. Costner had hired Kevin Reynolds to direct the film (he directed Costner in Robin Hood), but halfway through the shoot, either Costner fired him or Reynolds quit, I don't remember. I believe Costner finished directing the film himself, effectively blacklisting Reynolds, who wasn't a horrible director in his own right (he only directed 3 movies after Waterworld in 1995--187 in 1997, The Count of Monte Cristo in 2002 and the upcoming Tristan and Isolde next year).

20 Years old today!

https://www.yahoo.com/movies/waterworld-making-of-budget-1995-125254175097.html

And, surprisingly enough, the initial box-office take for Waterworld wasn’t bad: The film took $21 million the first weekend, and eventually got to an $88 million domestic total, taking in nearly twice as much abroad, for a worldwide total of $264 million. But despite Waterworld’s modest theatrical success, respectable home video run, and the occasional hit tie-in — the Waterworld attraction at Universal Studios theme parks remains a draw today — the movie was hardly the pop-culture-conquering, toy-selling phenomenon that the studio (and Costner) needed it to be, and for years, the movie remained a punchline.

Ha ha. Can't believe it's been 20 years. Makes me feel even older. I liked it and didn't understand why critics and others that it was crap. Maybe not a blockbuster but it was a good movie.

First movie that I can remember to talk about the polar ice caps melting. Somewhat interesting there.

Thought this was a great movie as well. The one I recently saw was the original Mad Max movie. Man, that had such bad acting and horrible filming. Granted it was in the late 70's

I liked it too. I remember there was a lot of talk of it being a bomb because of the budget. Other than that I always thought it was a water version of road warrior.
