Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors. He really blew it with Planet of the Apes, though I can't fault him for trying the project. It really stunk. However, with other classics such as Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, and Nightmare before Christmas really helped define Burton as one of Hollywood's true talents, and established his notoriety for making creepy, off centered, dark tales.
In Mars Attacks! Burton recreates the 50's sci-fi comic book, and does his best to keep the feel of the film true to the cheesy sci-fi genre of the 50's. Its a campy over the top film, as well as hilarious, and chock full of superstars.
Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Tom Jones, Annette Benning, Jim Brown, Michael J Fox, and Natalie Portman. Of course, in classic Burton style the INCREDIBLE soundtrack is provided by none other than Danny Elfman.
The story, of course revolves around the invasion of Earth by Martians. The citizens of earth, initially welcoming of the Martians soon find them selves at war after a miscommunication in the Nevada desert that leads to all out fighting. There are hilarious charactures of Colin Powell and George C Scott's character in Dr. Strangelove, and the film is chock full of the stereotypes you would expect from a 50's era childrens comic.
The film is a true achievement. If you haven't seen this, or you dont like it, I don't want to hang with you anymore.
