Tim Burton is one of my favorite directors. He really blew it with Planet of the Apes, though I can't fault him for trying the project. It really stunk. However, with other classics such as Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, and Nightmare before Christmas really helped define Burton as one of Hollywood's true talents, and established his notoriety for making creepy, off centered, dark tales.

In Mars Attacks! Burton recreates the 50's sci-fi comic book, and does his best to keep the feel of the film true to the cheesy sci-fi genre of the 50's. Its a campy over the top film, as well as hilarious, and chock full of superstars.

Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Glenn Close, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Tom Jones, Annette Benning, Jim Brown, Michael J Fox, and Natalie Portman. Of course, in classic Burton style the INCREDIBLE soundtrack is provided by none other than Danny Elfman.

The story, of course revolves around the invasion of Earth by Martians. The citizens of earth, initially welcoming of the Martians soon find them selves at war after a miscommunication in the Nevada desert that leads to all out fighting. There are hilarious charactures of Colin Powell and George C Scott's character in Dr. Strangelove, and the film is chock full of the stereotypes you would expect from a 50's era childrens comic.

The film is a true achievement. If you haven't seen this, or you dont like it, I don't want to hang with you anymore.

EDIT:

Some have added SPOILERS below without noting. Read with care.

I saw this when I was a little kid. When the martians shot the dove and the fighting began, the martians looked really scary. I had nightmares for a day or two about the martians.

SPOILER ALERT---SPOILER ALERT

I loved this film.

We would freak out our bosses at the plant when we would run around the production floor like the little aliens saying "NAH, NAH, NAH NAH!" to each other.

I loved the fact that it was Slim Whitman music that made their heads explode.

Classic!

Good movie - I loved watching this in the theater.

I'm pretty much sold on the Burton/Elfman combo and then when you throw Depp into the mix it makes it even better. Yeah, I know, Depp wasn't in MA. This movie was so good and fun. I felt Burton did a terrific job of capturing that genre of movie without being too cheesy and over the top. Perhaps the only thing that would really have caught that era is to have filmed it in black and white.

Great casting for this movie as well. I loved Jack Nicholson in this as both characters.

Come to think of it the only bad thing that I could mention about this movie is that it has Tom Jones - ugh, I can't stand that guy.

***********POSSIBLE SPOILER******************

I really love this movie for some reason, because it really isn't a great movie, taken as a whole. Burton appears to be sleepwalking through it, IMO.

I loved the Tom Jones cameo. Just perfect, that last scene where he starts singing with the animals is just great.

The only things I really disliked were Jack Nicholson--I thought, like Burton, he sleepwalked through the president role (Peter Sellers will always be the best comedic president in film history), but I did kinda like how his other character was so out there. I also didn't like Jim Brown--even though I think he fit the role, his acting ability really isn't very good, and in this cast, that really stood out. Plus, Pam Grier really didn't kill anything! How can you have Pam Grier in a movie and not have a long scene of her kicking major ass??? :D

Otherwise, I thought the movie was great. Pierce Brosnan, Annette Bening, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger and Martin Short were all terrific.

Good movie, Schutd!

I love how morbid this is. It's almost like Tim Burton was going out of his way to be the anti-Independence Day.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

My favorite is when Pierce Brosnan and Sarah Jessica Parker's severed-yet-alive heads are trying to kiss as they roll past each other shortly before destruction.

And how can you not love a movie that ends with Tom Jones dancing?

SPOILER!

Great movie, one of my all time favorite comedies. Very stupid yet hilarious at almost every turn. Danny DeVito was hilarious.

One of my favorite scenes is when they shoot the nuclear weapon at the mother ship. The Martians are running around the ship in their underwear. They catch the nuclear weapon in some device, inhale it, and then sound like they are on helium.

ACK, ACK ACK, ACK ACK ACK. Time for another viewing of this one. A steal on DVD at 8.99, I think is what I paid for it.

God I hated this movie.

The whole stupid scene with Pierce Brosnan head with no body putting the moves on the dog body chick was so mind boggling stupid that I wanted to leave the theater right then.

There was nothing smart about this movie, just cheese.

Wow, this film had a $100 million budget. With worldwide receipts it barely broke even.

I thought this movie was horrible.

I originally watched this movie on VHS in the late 90's. I hated it, but I thought maybe my tastes had changed so I recently gave it a second chance. Nope, could barely make it through. I love crazy movies like this, but I can't stand this one. It boggles my mind that a cast like this could make such a bad movie.

Definitely one of Tim Burton's most underrated movies. Love the fact that in this movie Tom Jones can fly a plane off the cuff.

My husband watches it every year. Alone. I think it's stupid. We should all live in teepees though.
