Unfortunately due to the fact I'm going to be in class pretty much all day and evening, I had to put this up extremely early.

Alright back to the topic at hand ...

Along with Spiderman and to a little bit of a lesser degree X2, how a superhero movie should be done IMO.

SYNOPSIS: Tim Burton's BATMAN, inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, is a Gothic, Wagnerian treatment of the Batman mythos that explains the origins of Batman (Michael Keaton) and his nemesis, the maniacal Joker (a ripe Jack Nicholson).

Gotham City is a sunless, ominous haven for criminals, held in the corrupt grip of crime boss Carl Grissom (the ever-magnetic Jack Palance), and terrorized by a sadistic vandal and murderer known as The Joker. But it isn't long before a dark, mysterious caped crusader, who goes by the name of BATMAN, is on their trail and trying to thwart their evil doings. In this darkly entertaining retelling of the Marvel comic classic, ace photojournalist Vicki Vale (warmly and sympathetically played by Kim Basinger) is also on the trail--she wants to find out who Batman really is. Based on the popular comic book character created by Bob Kane for DC Comics; the story and tone have nothing in common with the popular TV series of the 1960s. Imaginative special effects and imposing, Gothic architectural sets dominate this visually graphic, stylish film. Keaton gives a brooding performance as the Caped Crusader and his interestingly understated alter-ego Bruce Wane. But is it Nicholson's Joker that steals the show, with his unnerving, brilliantly maniacal portrayal, especially in the context of his twisted relationship with Grissom's gal Alicia (a lanky, disquieting Jerry Hall).

Although I absolutely loved the way that Michael Keaton played the character of the Dark Knight ... this was Jack Nicholson's show! His performance as the Joker was absolutely unbelievable.

You know its kind of funny that after watching this movie and all of the sequels is you watch as Batman seems to de-evolve. Batman goes from an edgy, badass character in the first two movies to a soft, almost wussy character in the last one. The way this is going, along with switching the part of Batman in every new sequel, I'm almost expecting Adam West to star in the next one. :)

Favorite Line(s): "Have you ever danced with the Devil in the pale moonlight?"
"... Why?"
"I ask that of all my prey"

I think it's by far the best of the Batman series, with Batman Returns as the only real candidate. The rest were much too flashy for my liking.

Still had the coolest Batmobile as well (which I saw when it went on tour a number of years ago).

Keaton was a good Batman, but like you said, Nicholson was a better Joker. He really exuded insanity and just stole so many scenes.

BTW, I'm still waiting for a re-release of this DVD as the original one is so bare-bones.

Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Selleck and Bill Murray were all considered for Batman. Tim Burton was pressured to cast an obvious action movie star. Producer Jon Peters favored Michael Keaton, arguing he had the right "edgy, tormented quality". Having directed Keaton in Beetlejuice, Burton agreed.
Ok, I can envision all of these as Batman except for one. Bill Murray?
