Plot Outline A talented New York bartender takes a job at a bar in Jamaica and falls in love.
Plot Synopsis: After leaving the Army, Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) tries to get a marketing job in New York. But without a college degree, this was not possible. He then decides to start studying for a business degree at the local City College and gets a part time job as a bartender. He realizes that its not that easy, but when his new boss Douglas Coughlin (Brian Brown) teaches him the secrets of the bar trade and they become the most famous bartenders in town. Both Brian & Doug Coughlin want their own top class cocktail bars someday and Brian's Cocktail Bar is to be called 'Cocktails & Dreams', and in order to get the necessary money to open it, Brian travels to Jamaica to work as a bartender at a resort Tiki Bar, and the pay is good. There he meets Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue), a young and pretty, up and coming American artist on vacation with her girlfriend from New York, staying at the Island resort. Jordan and Brian spend some quality time together and fall in love. But when Brian takes a dare from his old buddy, Doug Coughlin to sleep with an older woman, who is also staying at the resort. Jordan, herself the daughter of wealthy parents back in New York, leaves the Island overnight, after seeing Brian and the older woman together after closing... Will Jordan ever forgive Brian and will they get back together???

Editorial Reviews

This 1988 effort at creating a milestone coming-of-age story with the impact of The Graduate is commendable, but the results are mostly shaky and garish. Tom Cruise plays an ambitious young man who arrives in New York City and becomes known as a flashy bartender in a hot club. After falling for Elisabeth Shue's girl-next-door character, however, his desire for success causes him to travel down a more selfish path with an older woman. The film, directed by Roger Donaldson (Bounty), is built on entirely on appearances (Cruise's star charisma) and flash (the way Cruise and his character's bartending mentor, played by Bryan Brown, toss bottles of booze around). The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the hero's obvious Oedipal dilemmas, are lost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the story's intrinsic value. Cruise fans might want to take a look at this, but otherwise there isn't much to recommend it. --Tom Keogh

This one of my favorites from the 80’s. If my first son would have been a girl, she was going to be named Jordan. If you pay attention during one of the first bar scenes in Jamaica, you will see James Eckhouse (Mr. Walsh from 90210) at the bar.

I havent seen this movie, but probably should. I lost a question while watching "The World Series of Pop Culture" with Kim the other night.

The question was "what is the name of the bar that Tom Cruise's character wants to open?"

If losing that game means never having to see weiner....then I'll glad be the world's largest loser.

Man, that didn't come out good at all.

You like 80's movies...Therefore you really need to see this. Obviously the answer is Cocktals & Dreams. To be opened in every shopping mall......

Wow - you have major weiner-phobia. What is it about a half-second glimpse of another man's penis that gets you so riled up?

I watched the majority of it with two friends. They both kept saying, "dude, you should be on this show!".

How about me, you and D-Dogg? We'd need a good name.

Yeah, I blew the Tom Cruise category. Guessed "Outsiders" for the question about "Taps". I also didnt know his name from Days of Thunder.

dude, i'm there. although, my bro and i were talking about this the other day. i think they opened the floodgates with this show. too many people are now saying "i could totally do this!" so the field will be much wider and more difficult. i still think we should do it, though. i'll think on the name for awhile. it has to be so awesome, it's sheer awesomeness will makes us the champions.

Well, you can count me in. My strengths would be 80s and 90s TV, most movies, and hip hop.

It just bothers me....like anything bothers anyone. Some people hate smoke, others hate cussing, and others can't watch violence. If it has a point in the movie....go for it, but that is rare anymore.

As for the gratitous female nudity.....when have I ever said I'm a fan of that??
