In a downtown highrise building in L.A., a psychopathic bomber & extortionist rigs an elevator full of people to plummet into the basement if his $3-million demand is not met. When SWAT Officers Jack Traven & Harry Temple foil the bomber's plan and rescue the hostages, the bomber retaliates. First he blows up a city bus, then contacts Traven to warn him that a second bus has a bomb attached to it. Once that bus hits 50mph, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it will explode. The bomber also warns Jack that if any attempt at rescue is made, the bomb will also explode. Jack races down the freeway and manages to board the bus. When an accident injures the driver, young bus passenger Annie (Bullock) is forced to take over behind the wheel and keep the bus running at 50 in order to stay alive. Will Jack and his fellow SWAT members be able to stop the psychopathic bomber - or will the passengers be killed when the bus runs out of gas?

Oh man, I was obsessed with this movie in 1994. I remember watching it over and over again on vhs on my small tv in my room.

I know Keanu gets flack for his acting, but I thought he did a good job in this movie. Also, this was Sandra Bullock's breakout role - I thought their chemistry was great.

Love the action, love Keanu and Sandra, love it!!

I was working in Alaska during the summer that this movie came out. I had no tv, no radio, only books. When I got back to civilization, this was one of the first movies that I saw. I had a great time watching it.

After reading these trivia items from IMDB, I think that this movie could have been very different.

The film was originally written with the intention that Jeff Bridges would play Jack and Ellen DeGeneres would play Annie. DeGeneres was initially chosen because the role of Annie was going to be a comedic role opposite the serious role of Jack.

Jack's sidekick, Harry, was originally to be played by Ed Harris and in this version was going to be revealed as the mad bomber. However, when Ed Harris opted out, and Jeff Daniels signed, the producers felt that the audience would not accept the sudden twist in character so Harry was kept as a good guy throughout and the mad bomber written as a separate character.

Halle Berry turned down the role of Annie.

At various points in the movie's pre-production, the role of Jack is said to have been offered to: 'Stephen Baldwin' , William Baldwin, Johnny Depp, 'Bruce Willis (I)' , Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks
