Chaplin
Better off silent
Ok, maybe this is just a LITTLE different than the earlier picks...
First of all, anybody who wants to post a
and hasn't seen the film, don't bother. This is a brilliant movie, believe it or not.
SYNOPSIS: When Farmer Hoggett falls down a well, his convelescance threatens the livelihood of the farm he has built so painstakingly. Money is scarce, and in order to come up with the funds needed to keep the bank from foreclosing, Mrs. Hoggett takes Babe into the city to enter him into another big contest. Unfortunately, what can go wrong, does...
Most people would look at this choice and laugh, but this movie is not your typical kids movie. While the first film was joyous and funny and a very good family film, this one is darker. It contains the same great family qualities, but to me, it appeared to be more "grown up", i.e. the situations were much more serious and even bordering on frightening (body cavity searches for drugs and drowning dogs to name a few).
Of course, the stars of the story are the animals, and the filmmakers do a terrific job of not only controlling the animals, but giving them distinct personalities as well. Buoyed by such voice talent as Steven Wright, Adam Goldberg, Hugo Weaving and even Naomi Watts, you never get the feeling that there is an actor speaking--it's always an animal.
The movie is simply charming--but in a twist, it also has a lot of black humor, and it is very well made. Highly recommended. Before he died, even Gene Siskel proclaimed Babe: Pig in the City as the best film of 1998...
