I'm sure most everyone knows the plot of this movie all ready, even if they have never seen it. Directed by Luc Besson, La Femme Nikita tells the story of Nikita (Anne Parillaud), a street junkie who kills a policeman during a robbery and is sentenced to life in prison. But Nikita is given a second chance by a secret government agency that turns her into an assassin. After her release back into society, Nikita falls in love with a man named Marco (Jean-Hughes Anglade) and she must try to conceal her true occupation from him. Whenever she feels that she and Marco may have a future together, her government mentor, Bob (Tcheky Karyo), appears with another assignment. Nikita must figure out how to reconcile her two worlds and attempt to leave her past behind her.

Unfortunately, in typical Hollywood fashion, it was apparently decided that a foreign film would be better if it was re-made in English and the movie Point of No Return was released a few years after La Femme Nikita with Bridget Fonda in the "Nikita" role. The English-language re-make is so far below the standards of the original it is almost laughable. Fonda is okay, but she can't hold a candle to Parillaud as an actress (not to mention that Parillaud is much prettier and much sexier).

The Marco role was played by Dermot Mulroney in the re-make and, again, he falls far short of Anglade's performance in the original.

Karyo (who most might remember from the English-language films
The Patriot and Kiss of the Dragon) is very good as Bob, who falls in love with Nikita, even as he is forced to put her in harm's way.

I highly recommend this film. It is a great action film, rapid paced and action-packed. Please don't settle for the Hollywood version of this story. You will definitely enjoy this movie better than Point of No Return. Sub-titles and all.

Good choice, and I agree - this is better than the Fonda version.

Recently watched it. Couldn't agree more. I was happy to Jean Reno in this. This movie actually reminded me a little bit of Leon.

Leon: The Professional is pretty much considered a spinoff of La Femme Nikita. Jean Reno's character in that movie was inspired by his character in this film.

Duh, that makes total sense. I should have realized that.

I also noticed a tv show was made in the late 90's based on this movie. Lasted five seasons.

Absolutely true. When I first saw it in theatres, I was living in Hong Kong so it was dubbed in Chinese, with English sub-titles. I was so confused! Thank goodness I later saw it in it's original French, with English subs.
