MoviePass Gets Exhibitor Endorsement, Launches Pilot Program With AMC

http://variety.com/2014/film/news/m...t-launches-pilot-program-with-amc-1201380586/

MoviePass, the subscription service that fancies itself as a Netflix for movie buffs, has finally snagged a major exhibitor.

AMC Theatres is joining forces with the startup company on a pilot program that will launch in two markets in early 2015. Customers will be able to buy a new subscription package, MoviePass Premium, for between $30 to $45 a month. In return, they will be able to see a movie a day. Higher end packages will enable customers to see films in premium formats such as Imax and 3D.

The average AMC theater ticket costs a little less than $9.50. The pilot program will launch in nine theaters in Boston and 10 theaters in Denver. It will expand to other markets based on user interest.

I read this the other day and the first thing I thought of was my gym membership. I have had roller coaster attendance and no matter what...they continue to make a crap load of money off of me. LOL.

There are maybe only a couple movies worth seeing in a given month. AMC for example is jumping on this bandwagon and their concessions are more expensive versus Harkins. I bet they would love for me to either not go at all (still getting my money) or get me in their 4 times or more for drinks etc.

This might make sense for someone like me who is a movie freak but most people would end up seeing a ton of junk just to get their monies worth. Plus what if you have a big family? $30 times a family of 5 would be $150 a month. Hardly "like" Netflix unless that $45 dollars includes the entire family?

The beginning of the end...

Stock in the parent company is down to under a dollar per share. Tried to use moviepass last night, and EVERY movie was listed as having peak pricing, an extra $8. I don't know if it's based on the fact that it was a Sunday (weekend) night or what, but that is unacceptable. Even Ant-Man and Wasp was listed as Peak Pricing and that movie's been out for 3 weeks.

I'm not going to keep it if it keeps going like this, and it might not even matter anyway--they might not even make it in business through Christmas.

I think I'm going to drop Moviepass and switch to the A-list that AMC has going.

You can reserve your seats in advance, see ANY movie and you get 3 per week for the same price as MP.

It works for me because I have 3 AMC's in my area.

They are clearly in trouble. I was waiting on purpose to see how stable the company would remain. The irony is that the wife and I had decided to go ahead and join just as this all was breaking.

Sucks!
