MS Office and .xlsm files

I've started seeing these arrive and my old Office 2000 can't read them, neither can Google Docs.

Searches suggest they are spreadsheets with macros embedded ?

Can anybody shed some light on what is going on ? I heard rumors that MS has changed office to make it real hard for 3rd parties to read documents, is this part of that ?

It is the format for Word 2007 files, you will need this compatibility pack in order to open it with Word 2000.

I already have MS Office 2000

You out to download and try Open Office. It really is "most excellent" and so far has worked seamlessly with all Office Aps.

Tried it several times, I have lots on linux and other apps all around me.

Very familiar with things like Open Office
