Microsoft just let developers know that the new development kits now include tools to utilize the resources taken up by KINECT. Phil Spenser states "Spencer, developers can take advantage of more performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better."

Allegedly this will equate to about a 10% jump in GPU performance. Now normally I would be all giddy over that. However, if you add that they already overclocked the GPU earlier which equated to about a 8% jump in the GPU......that is now a 18% to 20% boost in the GPU since launch.

If that stuff is correct, that is nothing to scoff at. We shall see if this actually translates much in real world performance but these are resources developers have not had since the year leading up to launch. What is interesting is that they seem to indicate that even current games could take advantage of that power. My guess is some developer MIGHT patch games already released to take advantage.

What it will come down to is developers now making a tradeoff between adding KINECT functionality with less GPU or forgoing any KINECT functions for more graphics capabilities. With all the B.S. hype around resolution gate, my guess is that most DEVS will drop KINECT like a hot potato unless the game is made for KINECT.

My understanding is that it is a rehash of what we already knew and what MS had already opened up. its the same 10% as before, not a new 10%.

Without the game being made for kinect, I dont really need any kinect features anyway unless I can audible in madden but I dont buy madden anymore soo I guess I still dont care

No this is different. The first optimization was obtained for the CPU and GPU by overclocking both. That took place months ago. These are brand new development kits with new APIs etc. that allow you to use "reserved" GPU processing that was unavailable to developers until these new development kits were released.

By the way, I don't think the KINECT games are very good but I would still like to see them implement some cool features using it in FPS for example. There are creative ways to integrate that without building a KINECT only game.

This all but confirms the overhead on the CPU/GPU in the XBOX ONE. The PS4 could take the overclocking direction as well but they don't have as much overhead. Which means it will only benefit from natural and marginal gains over time. I think this just closes the gap that was not monumental to begin with.
