Well, they finally did it. For a while I thought they wouldnt fire him till the end of the summer just to spite him.

The ESPN link is busted right now, but the caption said their are looking at Stanford's Mike Montgomery to replace him.

Bad news for the Pac-10.

Apparently Monty didn't consult Rick Pitino or John Calipari before he made his decision. Sucks for the Pac. I think Monty is one of the top ten college coaches in the country. Who does more with the talent (or lack thereof) than Mike Montgomery?

I would tell Monty to stay put. Very few college coaches with no NBA experience do well when they go to the NBA. It is a radically different game and coaching multimillionaires with guaranteed contracts is extremely difficult - more so for someone who hasn't been around NBA players.

He was an assistant coach for Team USA at the last Goodwill Games. Not sure it's a positive, but at least he's been around some pros.

Considering their record...

Most big time college coaches are reluctant to serve as assistant coaches in the NBA for a few years to learn the game. The ones who do best started out as assistants in the NBA before going into college coaching. They learn the NBA game as an assistant and how to be a head coach in college.

I think Montgomery has as good a chance as any college coach of succeeding in the NBA.

--he's a real coach, not just a crack salesman (as most big-time college coaches are)
--his ego doesn't seem to be that big, which was the main problem with Pitino
--winning at Stanford is a tough, tough business, so Montgomery gets bonus points over other big-time college coaches

He's not that old, either.

I think Montgomery should improve the Warriors immediately. If nothing else, they'll be more physical and defense-minded, and their game coaching should be better than before.

Musselman is a decent coach, of course, and I'm sure he'll land on his feet just as O'Brien did.
