I think we're going to check this out this weekend...it's playing at Harkins in Chandler.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/my_date_with_drew/

The guy used $1100 he won on a game show where he guessed Drew Barrymore as the right answer, and decides to go on a quest to meet her and go on a date with her.

He buys a camera at Best Buy, and plans to return it before 30 days to get his money back.

Getting decent reviews too...I think it's about the most interesting sounding movie out there this weekend :)

Technically, he's not getting any money back. :D

I might see this when it hits DVD, but I'm not much of a Drew Barrymore fan so a movie about a guy obsessing over her isn't all that appealing, except for the concept and how it's carried out.

You have to like her in order to appreciate the movie? She's probably not even in it until the very end...it's about the guy and his journey, lol.

Yeah, I said "You have to like her to appreciate the movie?"

And instead of saying, "Yes", you pull a Chaplin and make fun of my listening and reading what critics say about movies...which I just don't get anyways.

Sorry, I figured that it was a rhetorical question since I had already said - a movie about a guy obsessing over her isn't all that appealing, except for the concept and how it's carried out.

So, yes - I could see the movie and appreciate it because of the concept, but I might like it a little less because I'm not a Barrymore fan. I liked her in her early roles - E.T., Firestarter, etc. but have found her to be annoying in her more adult roles.

As far as the critics - I just ignore them. I see what I want to see regardless of how many thumbs or tomatoes something gets or doesn't get. :D

Well Chap, if you are going to build a rep around here for certain things, sometimes, you just have to live with the consequences :)

That's fine, but I would rather not waste my money on seeing crap....sure, sometimes I'll see something just because...War of the Worlds didn't get the greatest reviews, but I had to see it.

Likewise, if RottenTomatoes have 50 reviews on for a movie, and 2 of them are GOOD ones...I'm going to save my money for something that is of more worth.

:daveramsey:

right Bim?

Ebert and Roper have suggested movies that I wouldn't have normally found out about if I didn't listen to reviews. How would a regular person looking at movie listings find out about a flick like Maria Full of Grace?

I just don't think listening to reviewers and their opinions makes me some kind of sell out or a poor movie watcher.

Now, if I was a reviewer for a paper, and then listend to Tomatoes or Ebert to find out if it was good or not before I put MY review out to double-check, that would be lame.

To each their own.

I guess you could use the Tomatoes site to gauge how the general public feels about a film, but to me it still has no bearing on whether I'd like it or not.

I mainly steer clear of critics because I don't really care about THEIR opinion of a film. Sometimes they give away key plot details or show previews that do also.

Listening to the critics is a huge waste of time. Aside from the fact that the general public and the critics are often just full of it concerning a given movie, their tastes may simply be different than mine.

Some critics maybe...but a lot of times, guys like Ebert you can really trust...and they tell you about movies you might otherwise miss out on.

I doubt I would have ever watched The Machinist unless I heard them talk to highly about it.

Right.

To me, there are way too many variables.

Critics often don't like a movie because they didn't think the movie went in the direction they wanted it to, or they would have picked a different actor for this role, etc. Too often they take a film and tear it apart like an English teacher ripping into a poem and dissecting it, looking for meaning and symbolism in everything, instead of simply enjoying it for what it is.
