First, off thank you to everyone on this board. You all helped me excellerate my learning of the game.

I have really enjoyed my first season of hockey.

On to my question:

What is this HUGE difference I keep on hearing about when it comes to playoff hockey ?

All my friends keep saying "If you like hockey in the regular seasoon, you are going to LOVE the playoffs."

Why is that? What is so different ?

THanks again

Not a hockey fan, but playoff hockey is fan-tastic.

Teams playing a series instead of just one night. Overtime games galore, decided on crazy plays. Seeing a 3OT+ game isnt out of the question.

Because generally speaking, no one takes a shift off. It's especially intense because it's fast like basketball, but the stakes for each goal are high like soccer. At any moment there could be a breakaway. Power plays are HUGE. And the Stanley Cup is perhaps the most coveted trophy in all of sports. Of course some will talk about the World Cup, etc., but in terms of the chase for an actual single piece of hardware...Lord Stanley's Cup is unique. Game 7 of the finals, when everyone knows the Cup is in the building...as I said: intense.

Add to it the fact that they play the same team night in-night out until the series is over. That just adds to the tension, and frustration.

Also there are no shootouts in the playoffs so as abomb said you could see games go into multiple OT's so that makes for great games.
