Back when I was playing FB in HS, there was rule about lightning being within 5 miles or something. I was suprised they stayed out on the fields, it was getting mighty flashy out for a minute. Anyways, ill update with my pneumonia tomorrow. I was not prepared for rain. Coming down HARD on the way home, couldnt see 5ft in front of the truck.

For those who have never been to a practice before, they are relatively boring. Alot of dudes standing around most of the time. Everyones waiting for the same exact thing: Fitz v PP. Overall it was fun. I already saw some others gave a full play by play from practice, so Ill just give own unique observations:

- Laron Byrd is a BIG dude. Hes looks like a tight end. Too bad hes terrible.
- Housler is impressive. Very fast. Very quick and fluid in space.
- Adub was on point today. Man that dudes looking sharp out there. His coverage skills are night and day from where they were just a few years ago.
- I dont know if Daryn Colledge is a jerk, being funny, lazy or a prima donna, but he seems to have his own personal staff member who fetches him towels, water, gatorade, you name it. I saw this kid run 40 yards to the sideline, and 40 yards back to Daryn. He hands the gatorade to daryn and Daryn hands it back, and the kid unscrews the cap. Yet every other teammate around him are grabbing bottles out of a cooler right by the field. Doesnt matter, just an observation.
- Hate to say it. This guys like herpes, he just wont go away, but Mike Adams played well. He keeps putting himself on the cusp of getting cut, finally, and then he does something to regain the coaches love. Possibly bad throws, possibly excellent reads, but he was tearing up guys much bigger than he during the 1on1 drills.
-Not much too say about Floyd. I wanted to come back with tales of his awesomeness, but really there is none. Hes a big guy (although not as big as some are saying, Laron Byrd seems Much bigger) who runs good routes. Speed isnt impressive. Seems to catch everything, although none of the catches require any significant athletecism anyways. He seems very bland, which IMO is a good thing. Bland means hes doing his job perfectly, and making it look easier than it is.
- Roberts looks like hes been hanging out with Adub this offseason. Dude packed some muscle on. Hes starting to look like a respectable #2 WR. Soon to be #3. Thats Floyds spot. On a sidenote, Early caught everything I saw. Guys an ace slot receiver.
- Not news at this point, but I think the verdict is in: Ryan Lindley is a bum. His footwork is so bad. His throw is even worse. Hes all over the place. Guys the antithesis of accuracy. At least we get to keep Rich after we cut Ryan and his buddy DeMarco. Guys got the droppsies.

- Skelton is so aggravating. Guy either drops dimes, or doesnt even put it in the ballpark at all. Picks galore today. And they werent great defensive plays, they were sloppy throws with bad decision making behind them. Im starting to think Kolb will win the starting job by virtue of Skeltons suckness during practice. Kolb isnt helping himself though. What a baby. He got a bruise so he gets to sit out.

- Also not news because I know alot of people have mentioned it before, but Larry really does drop alot of balls in practice. Im thinking he gets all his drops out of his system in the offseason and thats why hes such a stud come gametime.

- PP looked real good during 1v1. I think he went 2 for 4 vs Larry but he slipped once and that turned into a gimmee. Gay, the supposes lock for the #2 spot, didnt look good. I know we have a traffic jam of CBs at the moment, and from what ive seen, IMO, we should keep PP, Adams, Fleming, Jefferson (ugh, I hate that) and possibly Toler if we have a 5th spot. I think Bethel just has the misfortune of being amongst a stacked CB Corps.

- I noticed somewhere near the beginning of practice after some offensive run throughs, Ryan Williams seemed to come up a little gimpy. He took off his helmet, walked over to a dude and they talked. After that he made his way over to the bikes for the rest of practice. Hope hes OK.

Rant

Heads up to anyone going to camp, and hopefully this isnt any ASFN member, but keep the sideline coaching to a minimum. Theres this dude at practice, entire time, yelling out technique critiques to players "Ey Roberts! You gotta drop that hip when you dig! Dont be afraid to engage him, just remember not to let him cross your facemask!". Entire time.

Secondly, theres this white line along the sidelines you cant cross. Your foot cant even be on it, has to be completely behind. Stay behind it. They got these teenagers prowling the sideline telling people to please get back, etc. Thats fine, whatever. But when they ask you to get back, then get back. I cant tell you how many 40 something year old grown men were acting like 5 year olds, tip toeing on the line, intentionally trying to cause trouble. Im not going to beat up someones father in front of them, but that was thoroughly annoying.

I dont blame Kolb for sitting. Thigh bruises dont feel good, I had a gross one a couple years ago. Took me about 3 or 4 days before I felt like I could pull my leg towards my chest again. Trying to run around with a deep bruise down to the muscle (I would assume) would run a real risk of causing a strain or a tear.

... just so this post isnt too out of character:

The injured leg might keep the big sissy in the pocket, but too bad his noodle arm wont let him throw it over his own linesmen's heads!

Bodha, thanks. From what you say about Roberts and Doucet, I'm thinking that Doucet, who has been a slot receiver his entire Cards' career, will be our #3 WR. Roberts and Floyd will battle for #2 and #4. And as TC goes along, my only hope is that the QB's improve with time, or that they are better gameday players than practice players.

Is Bethel only lining up at CB?

Or are they also looking at him at safety or in a CB/S combo role?

Sounds like Housler is a legit breakout candidate this year. When we draft a QB next year, he should have a plethora of weapons to work with.

WR: Fitzgerald, Floyd, Doucet, and Roberts is IMO a top five WR corps. All have good size except Roberts and he's the shifty one. Doucet is the best total package, but not the best player.

Add in Housler and Williams and this should be a dangerous passing real soon.

Just sucks we're a decent QB away from being a really good team. Hell, even an average QB, I'd be fine with the 15th best QB in the league. That really doesn't seem to be asking much.

Yeah, but I'm worried Housler will be held back because we don't have QBs that will be able to get him the ball.

I was just getting ready to post almost the exact same thing.

However, for some reason, I think come real season time, the QB's will be ready to go. It's still only the 1st week of practice so there can't be too much stock put into it, no matter how disconcerting the reports are. I remeber reports of Warner looking bad but the difference is KW had performed at a high level in the past.

Yeah, I'm doing my best to be positive, although my head and heart are thinking two different things right now.

Per Urban Williams didnt practice today, but you saw him come up gimpy?? I hope it was a planned day off.

I dont know what "practicing" conotates. Maybe thats just 7 on 7 work, but drills dont count. But Ryan Williams, #34, lil sweetness, was on the field and running plays with the O for about a half hour.

I am positive he seemed to come up a little gingerly and took a pretty deliberately slow walk over to this guy, they talked, and then he went directly to the bikes for the remaining practice.

HE didn't practice. He was stressed but only participated in some drills. I think personally that once it started to rain which it did they didn't want him practicing on the wet field.

Good point. I forgot about the wet grass. Everyone was slipping and sliding out there, especially during WR/CB 1v1 drills.

Yep Housler gave glimpses last year of talent so it's great to hear that he appears to have figured it out. If Kolb can stay healthy my belief is he's good enough to do some damage with this group.

But if he can stay healthy is a huge question as is of course will Beanie's knee hold up and will Williams' knee hold up. If they all stay relatively healthy I think the offense will be MUCH better.

if Kolb can't stay healthy then the reports about how inaccurate Skelton is are scary. I can see a guy having a tired arm this early in camp, or maybe overthrowing guys because he's amped up. But when hes' missing several feet one side or another AND missing high(as always) it really scares you. That maybe his accuracy issues are going to be a constant problem for him.

I sure hope one of them solves their issues, with this group as someone said even an average QB will have a chance to put up some numbers(assuming the OL holds up).

I'm waiting till the first preseason game to be discouraged about our QB situation no matter how bad or mediocre they look in training camp. :D

Totally_Red, wait until the second or even third game. First game is bound to be sloppy, and by the third game if you don't see improvement, then we'll all be worrying.

I tried to give Matt Leinart away for free on Craigslist, only condition was you had to have a hot tub....no takers (I guess SMEL doesn't browse Craigslist:D).

Even a bigger question mark than QB right now. These two guys need a little time back there. They won't get it a whole lot, mtl.

I disagree, I thought the Oline played moderately well last year. It was Kolbs constant fleeing from the pocket, whether it was holding or not, that caused so many sacks/QB pressures.

It comes down to QB play. Peyton Manning has never had a great Oline. Same goes with Ben in Pitt. If the line gives you 3 good seconds, then theyve done their job.

I agree that Kolb did have happy feet in the pocket when he was in there but I also remember the tackle play being horrible in the first half of the season. Everytime the ball was snapped the outside pressure was immediately in Kolb's face. I remember trying to temper my opinion on Kolb at the beginning of the season because the tackle play was so bad.

I might get flamed for saying this but I think if we hadn't gone 7-2 down the stretch, if would've been better and we likely would've brought in a vet or draft pick to compete for the QB job.

In typical Cardinals fashion when we need to suck we don't and come up short when greatness is in our grasp.
