My reasons why it has to be a quarterback at #10.

of course I am assuming that one of the big 3 (Young, Leinart, Cutler) is still on the board when we pick at #10. I am in no way suggesting we trade up to get one of those guys. I am only advocating that we need to take one of those guys is one falls to us at #10.

I've been a fan for going on 28 years now and in that time span the Cards have used one #1 pick on a quarterback (1987-Kelly Stouffer) and he never donned a Cards uniform. We have spent a few 2nd rounders on quarterbacks (Neil Lomax, Jake Plummer, and that kid from Penn State in 92). If my research is correct and I think it is, we are the only team in the last 18 years not to draft a quarterback in the first round.

Its time to take one in the first round. Now before people get in an uproar about who to take let me start by saying this: I am not a professional scout and from what I have read on this board none of you are either. However, there are a ton of professional scouts out there who spend thousands of hours pouring over these kids and the majority seem to agree that Jay Cutler, Vince Young, and Matt Leinart are franchise caliber quarterbacks. Guys like Mel Kiper and Pat Kirwan etc... don't just come up with these kids on their own. They have contacts in the league and those contacts let them know who has a first round grade etc... and no matter what our opinions are these 3 quarterbacks are given 1st round grades.

That being said I don't really have an opinion of who we take of those 3 quarterbacks and this post is not about who we take only that we need to take one of those guys. Why? many reasons actually. The Cardinal organization has made a huge attempt over the last few years to rectify the losing atmosphere and loser image of the organization. The new stadium, new uniforms, new logo, change in structuring of contracts, aggessive in free agency. All things that point to being a viable winning organization. Dennis Green has come in and addressed long time problem areas on the team (defensive end/pass rush, defensive backfield, runningback), but he has not addressed the single most important positon on the field (quarterback) other than bringing in a aging veteran who can't stay healthy (Kurt Warner).

If you need and example of why its so vitally important to get that franchise quarterback then look at the Bengals and Colts as examples. The Bengals were in a predicament back in 2003 when they had the 1st overall pick. Marvin Lewis was a brand new coach and he wanted to bring in a difference maker right away, but he also understood that investing in a franchise quarterback even if he didn't contribute right away could pay off bigtime in the future. The Bengals had many opportunities to trade out of that 1st pick, or they could have taken someone else instead of Carson Palmer but they stuck to their guns and took him knowing that he would sit for a year. The Colts did the same thing with Manning back in 98.

So many of us use the excuse that Dennis Green needs to win now and drafting a quarterback with that first pick means we don't get an impact player for next year. That arguement is bogus. Just look at Cardinal history to show how bogus that arugement really is. Name me one rookie (and that incluedes the good ones) that had a dramatic effect on the Cards winning bunches of games. Rolle had zero impact, Fitz was good but we still only won 6 games, even Boldin (2nd rounder) as great as he was only helped us win 4 games.

If Dennis Green needs an impact rookie first round pick to help him get over the hump for next year then we are in big trouble because history shows that you can't count on a rookie to make that gigantic of an impact regardless of the position. I actually think that taking a quarterback #1 give teams a psychological advantage at times. The veterans on the team realize that the franchise has enough faith in the current roster to win that they can take a guy to sit for a year. Look at the Chargers in 04 and the Bengals in 03 as examples teams that took quarterbacks #1, had those kids sit and them went out and had a great season without their help.

Cutler, Young, or Leinart-Its time Cards to bite the bullet and get one of those guys in here.

Great post, Holian.

Just one thing. Didn't Cinncinati take Palmer after actively trying to trade the pick but finding no takers? I seem to recall that.

Excellent post. I would be pretty suprised if we did not go QB if one was there.

I remember last year we were pretty confident that one of the big three RB's would be there when we picked. They weren't. I expect that all three QB's will be gone this year too.

My prediction:

Titans - Leinart
Packers - Cutler
Lions - Young

The Packers drafted a quarterback in the first round last year (Aaron Rogers). I doubt any team in NFL history has ever taken a quarterback in the first round in back to back drafts. The Lions have signed both John Kitna and Josh McCown as free agents. I really doubt they invest more money in the quarterback position.

One of those guys is going to be there. I agree that the Titans take one of the quarterbacks and I can see the Raiders taking another one. Unless a team like Baltimore or Minnesotat trades up into the top 10 then I think we will get a shot at one of those quarterbacks.

I love the draft!!

I agree that we have a good chance at getting a shot at one of them.

If not, I do hope V. Davis is on the board.

I don't think the Packers are comfortable with Rogers and if I were the Lions I wouldn't be too comfortable with Kitna and McCown. Cutler and Young appear to be more of the QB's you would want to build your team around.

I totally agree with the post. It's logical, makes sence. Ticket holders for future seasons need reasons to renew a big name drafted QB would be that ray of sunshine after we steer the ship in the right direction this year. You just keep building.

All that being said, I think the odds of us getting one of these guys and I'm a big Young fan (the kid knows how to win forget everything else), just wont be there. I couldn't tell you who takes who, or who trades up to take who, but kids like these with real potential are not in a long line. I hope he is there, if not we must start thinking trade after the draft or a third rounder for a back up with potential.

Holian....I'm one of the biggest QBOF backers on the board and i think it is necessary to get the right guy. In fact i have written numerous posts on why we SHOULD trade up to get Lienert as i see in him what i seen in Tom Brady. All he does is win and his intangibles and mental acuity are off the charts...

But i have softned my stance for one reason. We are on the cusp. A big time OL, a guy like Davis running up the middle of the field, or AJ Hawk hitting the snot out of people will make us a playoff team NEXT YEAR. Matt Lienert, Vince Young, or Jay Cutler likely won't help that cause.

Saying that i will be ecstatic if my Cardinals actually show some balls and realize what it takes to succeed in the NFL and get the guy they deem to be the guy. But thats the ultimate caveat right there. Don't reach for the QB if you dont feel he will be a success in YOUR system. If they like Cutler (and by all accounts they say he is a bigger stronger, more mobile KW) than take him. If Denny loves VY as much as i think he does (if both Cutler and VY are on the board i guarantee you he takes Young...but this is Dennys ego getting in the way IMO as i am the least sure of Youngs ability to succeed) then take him. But make sure your guy is there. I trust Denny enough that i will give him the benfit of the doubt no matter who he takes.

Heres what i see happening if you read between the lines. Either they draft a QB ( the article on Kerry Collins interest and the quotes that came out leads me to believe this is a certainty if THEIR guy is there) or they trade down, pick up an extra pick, and draft Williams in the teens, whom i can certainly understand Denny being enamored with. If Young is off the board, i'm not positive they will draft Cutler and might opt for Justice instead. I hope they take Justice, Cutler and Davis in that order.

I think Justice could be a premier left tackle with his skills and you dont get that at ten. I think Cutler learning from KW is the best thing you could ask for and hes everything you want physically and mostly mentally too. Davis is an obvious #3 choice as he would be a big time weapon.

I dont know about you guys but i'm getting hella excited about the draft!!!

I think Cutler will be on the board, and short of someone unexpected falling out of the tiop-10 along with him, I think the cards should grab him.

One of the main reasons I'm for getting one of the top-QBs this year as opposed to waiting (again), is the career development with Boldin and Fitz. If we wait even another year, I think we're better served trying to get a veteran in here to follow Warner.

the Cowboys took Aikman and Walsh the same year, but Walsh was a supplemental.

I gotta say if I'm Aaron Rodgers right now I'm not feeling too good, the packers are bending over backwards to accommodate Favre which has to tell me, Aaron Rodgers, that they're not all that impressed with me so far?

Wasn't Walsh traded the next year to the Saints for a number 1 pick?

An excellent post Holian, I couldn't agree more with you. I think that Cutler has the best chance of the 3 qbs of being there if no one trades up. Denny has said that the Cards will take the best player available regardless of need or position. He always has, especially on the first round. He took Culpepper in 1999 when they had Randall Cunningham coming off of a MVP year and Jeff George signed as the backup. His rationale was that you don't get many chances to draft a franchise quarterback especially when you are a playoff team (means picking much lower)which the Vikings were. (Note that got the 12th pick (#?) in a trade with the Redskins sending them Brad Johnson).

Michael Bidwill really calls the final shots. He knows that with the new stadium having a young potential franchise qb will set the Cards for the future. That will mean winning games which sells seats. I just hope that one of the three does fall. This is going to be a very interesing draft.

I like the reasoning but you also forgot to list all the times a team was burned by taking a QBOF. It's a tough situation because there's so much pressure to play the young QB and that usually is before he's ready and can set the team back a couple years while he develops. Harrington is prime example. He was a pretty good prospect but was thrown in there too early. The Cards are in a good situation because they can let a guy sit for a year or two behind Warner. I wouldn't hate a QB being taken but if a guy like Davis is there, and is head and shoulders the best prospect,it's hard to pass that up as well.

It's not a question of just "taking a QB." It's a question of taking the right quarterback. One with the physical skills, the mental makeup, and the college experience to excel on the NFL level and to be able to step in on a team with expectations. I'm convinced that Matt Leinart and Vince Young are the right kinds of players to invest this kind of time, money, and draft pick (#10 overall) in.

I'm still not sold on Jay Cutler. The only real arguement for him seems to be that other people say that he looks good, and that's about the worst argument I know for drafting a guy in the Top 10. He doesn't win, he doesn't make his teammates better. Surely a Top 10 NFL QB prospect could will his team to the OutbackTireHolidayWorldPeace Bowl, right? Right?!

There's too much "we need to draft a high-profile quarterback" going around on the board (again). Look at the guy and see if you see an NFL star there. I see it with Leinart and Young, but I look at Cutler and I see Kyle Boller and J.P. Losman. Neither were Top 10 picks, and neither have performed up to even those lesser expectations. Convincing yourself that a guy can play is an okay strategy with a 4th round pick, but not with the #10 overall. It's just a bad idea.

I would also take a QB in 1st but only if he is one of the top three. If none of those are available I wait until round 2 to see if their value fits the slot we are drafting in. The only other option is to trade up and I doubt that would ever happen.

I'm not impressed with Cutler, really. Still, if he's the only QB on the board, I wouldn't be disappointed taking him, unless one of the consensus top guys or Winston Justice are on the board.

I think Kurt Warner can take us to the playoffs, but in questioning his age and durability, I don't think he can take us to the Super Bowl. I know a first round QB doesn't necessarily equal success, but at least that would give us stability at the position for years to come. I don't think Warner is going to last at a high level for the next three years of his contract, and finding a retread isn't going to work.

I'd like a first day QB, preferably Leinart (all but impossible), or Young.

The thing that sticks in my crawl about Cutler is that an elite college QB should be able to produce wins, period. Vandy is in the SEC, but they lost to Kentucky for crying out loud.

He might be a fine NFL qb, but he makes me nervous.

Never limit yourselfs to picking one position in the draft. I don't care the position, you have to look at each prospect individually.

If you focus on one position instead of BPA, then you reach and have drafts similar to Tobin's and Mac's.

Drafting the QBOF is the holy grail of the NFL draft, IMO.

I am all for getting a franchise type QB but not interested in wasting another top 10 pick on any position, including QB.

I have confidence in Denny's drafting.
