The Vortex!
I’m not an X and O kind of guy so bear with me here.
This is my take on the three series that Matt played. I have rewound, slowed down to frame by frame and everything else my DVR allowed.

1st Series
1st play) Hightower runs opposite direction for two yards. It could be me but I don’t think the play was designed that way.
2nd play) I have watched this play over and over again and Lyle absolutely steps on Matt’s foot.
3rd play) Ok, here we go. So many things wrong with this play.
Three man rush!
Well’s doesn’t look at Williams and moves to double team the tackle.
Meanwhile, Hightower doesn’t even acknowledge Mario let alone chip him.
Levi has it under control and Faneca is looking for someone to block.
Total breakdown by Wells and Hightower and Keith is left on an island.

2nd Series
1st play) What a train wreck! Receivers and Tight ends running into each other and bunching up, oh my!
Seriously, slow this down and watch, Matt’s arm gets hit on release but that was not the reason the play fell apart.
2nd play) I have watched this play over and over again and I find nothing wrong with it, thankfully it was a little high. You want to put blame on somebody? Blame the coaches for sending Fitz over the middle. Why do we need to do that in pre-season?
3rd play) Hightower for three yards, off the right side.
4th play) Dump off to Jason Wright for four.
5th play) Early, hot route for a 1st down!
6th play) Very nice play to Spach for fourteen yards and a 1st down, probably could have hit Fitz for a few more. Yes, Fitz is still in the game!
7th play) Hightower for three yards.
8th play) Matt falls down, completely on him.
9th play) 3rd and 14, Matt dumps off to Hightower for nothing.
10th play) Feeley misses.

3rd Series
1st play) Fitz finally leaves the game. Beanie for four yards.
2nd play) Hightower for 1st down.
3rd play) Beanie for four yards.
4th play) Beanie for nothing.
5th play) 2nd and Six. This is one of the more telling plays of the game.
Early catches that ball and Breaston misses his block. Breaston makes the block, huge gain, he didn’t we turn the ball over.

So here is my diatribe.
For those of you calling for Matt’s head and Faneca’s head find a DVR, slow the game down and watch. You may very well be surprised with what you see.

Under the circumstances, I thought Matt did an admirable job. The only complaint that I had is that when he got tripped up, he should have held onto the ball instead of trying to hand it off.

I did and I was. Faneca was awful. Matt wasn't. But then both lines were bad for the majority of the game.

One thing that really stood out is that the Cardinals pass rushers still have trouble running around the offensive tackles while their opponents don't. Sure Keith was left on an Island but an NFL Tackle has to be able to block guys one on one. Even Mario Williams.

Finally you do see some things watching in frame by frame that you miss originally. Like the first pass to Roberts that was intercepted. Roberts didn't miss the catch the Texans linebacker did. Anderson threw it right to the LB he just couldn't catch it.

Or that Marshay Green was playing at the LOS head up on the Texans WR on several plays instead of the usual 5-7 yard cushion. I think the Texans only threw one pass in his direction while he was in the game. Choosing to pick on #20 instead.

Or things like a running play where our pulling Guard trips over another lineman and falls down so there is nobody to lead the play and it gets stuffed so the RB gets no yardage and his ypc is adversely affected.

Which is why you need to put down the stat book and watch some film. :D

I thought Matt basically took what the defense gave him, when he was allowed by the O-line to do so. That is all I can ask of him right now. I don't expect him to be a gunslinger that can carry a team. I just want him to manage the game and not lose it for us.
