National League All-Star manager Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals today named Felipe Alou of the San Francisco Giants and Ned Yost of the Milwaukee Brewers as National League coaches for the 76th Midsummer Classic, to be played on Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at Comerica Park in Detroit.
"Our squad will benefit from the presence of these two outstanding managers that are at opposite ends of their careers," La Russa said. "Felipe has been an outstanding manager for many years. Ned has been outstanding in his first few years and will be for many years to come."
Alou is in his third year as manager of the Giants and his 13th overall as a Major League manager. He has won the most games of any Latino manager in Major League history and is ninth among active managers in wins. Alou was a three-time N.L. All-Star as a player - in 1962 as a member of the Giants and in 1966 and 1968 with the Atlanta Braves. He served as the National League All-Star skipper in the 1995 All-Star Game, a 3-2 N.L. victory at Texas. This is Alou's first assignment as a coach in All-Star play.
Yost is in his third year as manager of the Brewers. He was a 12-year member of Bobby Cox's coaching staff with the Atlanta Braves prior to joining Milwaukee, first as bullpen coach and then as third base coach. This is his first All-Star coaching assignment since joining the Brewers, but as an Atlanta coach Yost was part of the N.L. All-Star staff in 1992-93, 1996-97 and 2000. Yost played professionally from 1974-1987 and played parts of six seasons with the Brewers, the Texas Rangers and the Montreal Expos from 1980-85.
La Russa, who has the most wins among active managers and is fourth all-time in managerial wins, also has invited Dave Duncan, Marty Mason, Jose Oquendo, Joe Pettini, George Kissell and Dave Lackey to handle batting practice and other field duties. Trainers Barry Weinberg of the Cardinals and Mark Mann of the Cincinnati Reds will complete the N.L. All-Star staff.
