I guess you could say we dont have any good prospects, they are all in the majors!!
But seriously, if we were an east coast team, everyone would be talking about the young kids.

Mantei's Feelings Are Hurt

Mantei feeling slighted

By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

DENVER -- Matt Mantei returned from the disabled list Monday, but not to his usual role as closer.

That role, at least for Monday still rested with rookie Jose Valverde, who is 9-for-9 in save opportunities since being brought up to take Mantei's place June 1.

Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly informed Mantei that he would be setting up Valverde Monday night, but that things could change from day-to-day depending on how much the other has pitched, their effectiveness as well as a given matchup.

"For the time being we have a two-headed closer and we'll use them accordingly," Brenly said. "I view this as a tremendous positive, having two guys that are capable of closing a ballgame."

While Brenly views having two potential closers as a good thing, it clearly wasn't the news Mantei wanted to hear and he was visibly upset after speaking with Brenly.

"I was happy to come back until I found out I didn't have a job," Mantei said. "It's a joke. What makes it worse is that (Brenly) came out in the paper and said that I was the closer when I came back, but I'm not now. It's a joke ... I lose my job because I get hurt not because I can't get it done. Nothing against Valverde, he's done a great job, but it's my job, it's what I signed here to do."

Mantei saved 22 games for the Diamondbacks in 1999 after being acquired from the Marlins in July of that year. In 2000, he saved 17 games, but was injured after eight appearances in 2001 and needed Tommy John surgery, which ended his season.

Byung-Hyun Kim took over the closer's role and held it throughout 2002 even after Mantei made a mid-season return. The 29-year-old began this year as the closer and saved seven games before going on the shelf with shoulder problems.

He said he didn't ask Brenly for an explanation.

"Once I heard those words out of his mouth that I was going to pitch before Valverde in the game, I just kind of blocked everything out," he said. "I could care less what their explanation is."

Hack reporter that hasn't done his homework on the D'backs. The idea that we are looking for pitching depth is totally wacked!!

ESPN.com says:

I just KNEW the 12-game streak was little more than smoke and mirrors, and that our farm system had nothing to do with it!!

/sarcasm off

Morons....f****ng morons!! Everyone who says that the east coast bias doesn't exist is full of it, because ESPN practices it each & every day: for example, last Sunday night's Game of the Week was Mets v Yankees (no surprise), while the first place A's were playing the first place Giants; later on, what game do you think led off SportsCenter - D'Backs & the streak? A's/Giants? Nope - that meaningless battle between the aforementioned NY teams!!

Just like the old days in the 1950's/60's when CBS broadcast the Game of the Week.... you'd think that the ONLY team that ever mattered was the Yankees, since they were ALWAYS the chosen game...

Standings don't matter to the national media.... It's all about ratings and $$, and the east coast teams are the ones that bring the larger audiences to the tube....

I think everyone should lay off this guy. He just has not gotten the memo that the D-Backs are in contention agian. Gammons was about to give it to him, but he got caught up in his master plan to get the Red Sox to the World Series. THe thought of them back in the series made him giggle like a 4 years old a couple of hours. I sure there will be a retraction in a day or so when the streak hits 15 to 16 games.

He actually wrote the column a few weeks ago. It was edited and republished. Somebody forgot to edit the D-Backs.

I know that because what it said about the Phillies was even more ridiculous. It said the Phillies had a ways to go to get back in the wild card race. We were like huh? We're leading it. It was edited a couple ofhours later.

BTW, in response to this column I did a look at the D-Backs and found that their young kids were as statistically awesome as they have looked. Your team has almost ten players with an OPS over .800. Awesome.

Kata - 375/.455/.667/1.121 (R)
Gonzalez - .319/.394/.580/.973
Hammock - .321/.349/.580/.929 (R)
Finley - .295/.382/.506/.889
Cintron - .306/.347/.522/.869 (R)
Moeller - .312/.365/.487/.852 (2nd year)
Baerga - .324/.357/.476/.833
Dellucci - .276/.356/.457/.813
Hillenbrand - .265/.306/.500/.806
Overbay - .286/.369/.429/.798 (R)

Add in Valverde, Webb and Villareal and that's seven rookies really performing. No top end prospects?

Is Mantei one of the biggest crybaby's we have? Didn't he wine last year when Kim was doing well!!! Me thinks that Mantei could be on another teams disabled next year.
