Officials made multiple errors in the final two minutes of the Grizzlies-Warriors play-in game on April 15, the NBA said in its last two minute report.
The refs made four errors in the final two minutes, according to the report, but also said the five-second call on Santi Aldama in the final seconds was correctly made. The Warriors won the game, 121-116, and advanced to the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Grizzlies will have to win on Friday to earn a playoff spot.
The Grizzlies should have gotten the ball back down by one point with 7.3 seconds to play, the NBA said. Ja Morant knocked the ball away from Steph Curry and the Warriors kept the ball, but the league said the ball last touched Curry and should have gone to the Grizzlies. Curry hit two free throws a couple seconds later to put the Grizzlies up by three points.
Memphis then got called for a 5-second violation on the ensuing inbounds play. The league said there were no fouls on that play and that there was no error on the call against Aldama.
Those weren't the only errors. Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski was called for a foul on a Scotty Pippen Jr. shot attempt with with 37 seconds remaining, but the league said Podziemski made contact with the ball and it should not have been called a foul.
There were two other mistakes about a minute earlier. Warriors forward Draymond Green should have been called for a foul on a Scotty Pippen Jr. shot attempt with 1:29 to go, the league said, but Zach Edey also should have been called for offensive goaltending on his putback attempt right after that.
The Grizzlies trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half, but worked their way back into the game and took the lead in the fourth quarter. Morant left the game with an ankle injury but returned in the fourth quarter. Memphis would've had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds before the 5-second call.
Now, the Grizzlies will await the winner of the Kings-Mavericks game to learn who they'll face on Friday at FedExForum (8:30 p.m., TNT). The winner of that game will advance to the first round of the playoffs and will meet the top-seeded Thunder.
