NY, NY, United States (AHN) - National Basketball Players Association executive Billy Hunter made a bold statement Tuesday, saying a lockout looks inevitable next season.

Hunter, 67, virtually guaranteed a work stoppage in 2011 unless NBA owners and officials change their stance on several labor issues, including player’s salaries and benefits.
“I’d be 99 percent sure as of today that there will be a lockout, Hunter told New York Times Monday.
Hunter stated he already advised players to start saving money in case a work stoppage happens next year.
The ongoing labor talks between union and league officials have not been making significant progress in recent months due to contrasting ideas of both sides.

Of course both sides are going to say that. They want to scare the other side into compromise.

With some NBA players, it's probably a lot of benefits considering all the kids they have. Maybe they should agree on a shawn kemp cap on the amount of kids covered, or maybe a sprewell "Feed my family" program.

"...advised players to start saving money..." :bang:

That really shouldn't be THAT hard if even the lowest salaries are more than most of us will make in 5 years.

Ok, fill me in. I haven't heard any of him since his shoulder shaking and ugly looking threes about a decade ago.

He basically blew about $100m in a few years after retiring and is now in massive debt to casinos etc.

Antoine Walker broke and in debt http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ba...r-Antoine-Walker-is-broke-and-?urn=nba-198509
Amazing how some squander money.

Wow. I mean, buying your mother a house is a nice thing (although ten bathrooms seems a bit extravagant). But blowing that much money... If you wouldn't invest it in any other way than depositing 20 or so million on a savings account, I'm sure you could live very well from interest alone.

As for the lockout itself, I think the league would feel the aftershock this time around. You simply cannot put the NBA on hold for a season once every ten years without losing fans. From what I remember of the last one, when the season finally started, the quality was poor with teams not in the sync with their offensive plays and horrendous shooting percentages.
