Getting Garland or Sexton would be a way of making the trade more equitable for sure. I haven't followed their career much but the Suns could certainly use a backup point guard that can be groomed for the future.

I know Ty Jerome's defenses has been atrocious but with him being out 4 games makes me wonder if he might not be included in a trade.

I'm wondering if Tristan Thompson might not be a more likely target. He might be a better fit for the Suns and he is an expiring contract.

I haven't seen Garland lately, but earlier in the season he looked atrocious. Feeling like I may have been wrong about him, but it is still early I guess. Even so I really doubt they would be willing to give him up as a rookie.

The only way I would consider it would be Love for TJ, Kaminski and Saric.

And the right to swap picks (Suns option).

That seems really lopsided, but Love is a crippling contract for Cleveland. They would get out of that deal and still have a young player they can control in Saric. I believe they will eventually take that kind of deal from someone, unless there is a desperate contender out there with a good player who just doesn’t fit.

Neither are probably targets for the Suns. Mostly looking for ways to make a trade with Cleveland equitable.

I'd prefer Sexton to Garland but it would take one of them for the Suns to take on Love's contract, IMO.

I think Garland was a lot of hype. He was one of the few PG prospects in a draft lacking top level PG's. His injury seemed to help hide some of his shortcomings because he wasn't exposed for a full season like some other players were. I'm not saying he's a total bust but he wasn't worth a top 5 pick. He's been outplayed by Sexton but Sexton does have a year in the league under his belt so it's not surprising he's outplaying him. Neither of them look like true PG's though. They've started both of them together and it seems like they're both more interested in getting theirs than setting up others.

Hard pass on Kevin Love. The Suns' struggles are largely on the defensive end. Despite the injuries and suspensions, they're still top 10 in most offensive team ratings, including offensive rating, EFG, and TS% (mostly sourced from here: https://stats.nba.com/teams/advanced/?sort=OFF_RATING&dir=-1)

They're lagging more on the defensive end, specifically opponent points in the paint where they're 23rd. Kevin Love isn't going to help that. Having Ayton and Baynes healthy and playing should.

Wonder what Atlanta would be sending Detroit. I'd also be curious to see what Drummond could do elsewhere. He's a rebounding machine and paired with Trae Young and John Collins could be the beginning of an exciting team in the East.

Since the Hawks can sign him out-right this summer, I doubt that they will offer much.

Drummond has a $28M player option for next season that he is unlikely to exercise, forcing the Pistons to consider possibility of losing him in free agency. Among teams, there's an increasing belief that Drummond will be moved before February 6 trade deadline.

Personally I think signing Love would be be settling for mediocrity. Suns would use tie up their cap space, use a valuable pick or young players and handicap their future.

Let's not be settlers.

If the Suns want to trade a protected 1st round pick, I'm guessing there are much better options.
I love that he says love sucks at defense but it’s not like PHOENIX is good at that so who cares? I mean that’s the dumbest comment I could think of. Hey, we have a big shortcoming, so let’s make a trade that hamstrings us cap wise for years and makes the shortcoming even worse!

All of this and in the last 3+ seasons Love has missed over 100 games to injury.

That contract was a disaster the moment it was signed, a desperate move by a dumb franchise. Anyone who gives them any value in return is foolish.

The Suns are very likely to make a trade using Tyler Johnson's contract as a chip to make a trade work.

Anyone have any trades that make sense for the Suns? Maybe someone we haven't talked about.

Why? The same thing was said about Tyson Chandler's expiring contract last year, and the Suns did nothing other than gift him to the Lakers...

Why can't the sun's ever be in a trade conversation for a good player, it's always just some overpaid veteran who has huge flaws in their game

Yeah, I think it is more likely we let the contract run its course.

Moving Tyler means taking on an 8 figure contract that likely has multiple seasons left on it, seems an unlikely venture for a fringe playoff contender.

Weren't you one of the posters here who said it was certain that the Suns were going to parlay it into a trade for another player when he was acquired last year?

No. I have consistently stated the exact opposite.

Previous posts on the topic:

I don't think this trade is about Sarver saving money.

I do think we're getting a somewhat serviceable player for a player that was completely useless.

However, the big (and only obvious) benefactor in this deal is Miami and their tax situation. Seeing as Jones has already done a favor to an old teammate and now he seems to be helping out a former team... it's concerning.

Back in high school a friend of a friend became an assistant manager at a Wendy's. Worked out well for the friend and his friends, we got free sodas and occasionally free burgers too... probably didn't work out so hot for Wendy's. It's a Filiberto's now.

Expiring contracts are only trade pieces if you're willing to take back someone that is being paid a roughly equal amount per season but typically on a longer deal, non-contending teams generally are not looking to take on that kind of money.

Simply put... I doubt Tyler Johnson becomes a trade piece for us.

Sorry. My bad. There is another poster (Proximo, I believe) with a handle similar to yours I tend to confuse with you.

Don't stand in front of the football when Charlie kicks it. :D

We better take cover for when all those other shoes drop. I’m sure they’ll rain down on us all at once!

I keep saying that many posters here vastly overrate expiring contracts, but no one ever listens.
