With the PAC10 so far down this year in hoops, it almost appears as though only 2 teams make actually get the invite...depending on this question:

What are the odds of a team getting invited if they finish conference play with a .500 record or worse if they fail to win their conference tournament?

Pretty slim.

Did they have several solid out of conference wins?

Not really eyeballing a particular team...just generally curious about it because right now Washington is 8-6 in conference and Oregon is 7-7. They are likely the only other 2 teams with any hope of making the dance.

Well, we have 3 definites (UA, Stanford, Cal) and at least one maybe (Oregon). That's not too bad for a down year. Washington is an interesting team as well. If Washington can stay higher than .500, then they'll probably get in.

Cal's Sagrin Rating is 69.

UW's Sagrin Ratging is 89.

Neither team is a shoe-in. They need to win out and advance deep into the PAC-10 Tourney.

How can you say Cal? They are 7-7 in the PAC and 11-12 overall. They don't even have a winning record (according to ESPN.com). Unless they win out and maybe actually win the PAC tournament outright, I cannot fathom they will be invited.

Plus they still must face Washington and Oregon who are both battling to get invites.

All right, I take back the Cal pick--it's just the last I heard about them, they were considered the 3rd best team in the Pac. Guess that was longer ago than I thought.

Which heads us in a slightly different direction. Should the PAC10 coaches/admins/commish office be embarassed by the weakness of the PAC this year?

Last year, 5 PAC teams made it to the NCAAs and this year definitely 2 get in with likely 1 more thrown in (which of course opens up2-3 slots). How does it feel if the Missouri Valley or the MAC have more teams in the tourney that the vaunted PAC?

And if you look just at records, both those "mid-level" conferences have a case to fill those slots.

I think they have to look at how they're recruiting. Something's wrong, and they better figure it out. We have 2 of the best coaches in college basketball in the conference, but unfortunately the 3rd best and below are FAR below.

There is a huge gap between Stanford/Arizona and the rst of this conference in basketball.

Actually, in the Pac-10 standings, there is a gap between Stanford and Arizona in basketball. It's currently filled by the Washington Huskies. :D

True, but I was referring to the past few years or so. When was the last time someone other the Arizona or Stanford won the )ac-10 in men's basketball?

In fact, since 1979, here are the number of hoops championships won by each school:

AZ 9
UCLA 7
OSU 5
Stan 3
UW 2
ORE 1
USC 1

Interestingly, UCLA won the most conference games during that span - 313.

If you are looking at just the past ten years, Arizona (4) and Stanford (3) have won seven of the past ten.

I think that at least 3 teams will get bids from the Pac-10. The Big-10 is in trouble too. No way Michigan deserves to go. I wouldn't worry about the Missouri Valley getting more teams in than the Pac-10, although Wichita St. has really heated up and is probably a "Bubble Team". That still would only make 2 teams from the MVC (Southern Illini being the other one).

Southern Illinois (Sagrin rating of 22) is in the tourney from the Valley. Creighton (56) and Wichita State (62) have a shot as well. Michigan (65) is right there especially if they make some noise in the Big Ten Tournament. That win against Wisconsin was huge for them last week
