The NHL put their playoffs on some network most people don't even know they have. Plus, the big markets of Raleigh and Edmonton are going at it.

WCWS outdrew hockey when the NHL was on ESPN. It's probably even more lopsided now that the NHL is on the Canadian channel.

Pretty damning numbers on how bad hockey has it going right now.

I'm a big hockey fan, but I won't deny it's problems.

1.) The sport does not translate well to TV at all. I hope they can find an HD carrier that will let them play around with different camera angles. The side view is boring even for the biggest fans.

2.) Not a lot of characters for the fan to associate with. Americans just don't identify with the Euros very well.

3.) Small markets. They've tried to move more teams into bigger markets, but it takes time to build fan bases.
4.) So many teams has severly dilluted talent.

5.) Strikes. As well it should, it takes fans a while to get over petty strikes.
