An expected starter for the Nebraska football team announced their shocking entry into the transfer portal on Wednesday. After transferring to Nebraska in December, punter Jack McCallister announced he was entering the portal.

This past season, the former Washington punter averaged 44.0 yards per punt. He was expected to replace Brian Buschini, who has been Nebraska's punter for the past three seasons. Buschini averaged 44.7 yards per punt in 2024.

The Huskers now have Kamdyn Koch, son of former Nebraska punter Sam Koch, as the only punter on the roster. McCallister made the announcement on social media and wrote that he was leaving due to 'a change in circumstances.'

I’d like to thank Coach Rhule, Coach Foley, Coach Ekeler, Coach Maher and many others for the opportunity to play at Nebraska. However, due to a change in circumstances I have entered the transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining.

What change in circumstances could McCallister be talking about in his statement? According to Sean Callahan of Husker Online (subscription required), a change in special teams coordinator led to the surprising entry into the transfer portal.

After two years on the job, Nebraska special teams coordinator Ed Foley was relieved of his duties, and Matt Rhule hired Tennessee Volunteers special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler in his place. According to Callahan, Ekeler plans to use a rugby-style punter for the Cornhuskers while McCallister is a traditional punter.

Interestingly enough, McCallister left Washington because the Huskies will be using a rugby-style punter in 2025. Now he is looking for a new home, and Nebraska is looking for a punter who fits Ekeler's scheme.
