my computer crapped out big time yesterday. had no luck at all getting it to boot. used windows install disk, emergancy reboot diskette, neither worked.
looks like the harddrive might be totally shot. i would like to recover as much info off of it as possible. does anyone know of a computer service place that can do this kind of thing?

:stupid:

You may need to adjust the prongs in the back to set your bad hard drive as "slave" and your primary as "cable select"

Data recovery is very, very expensive. I wouldn't be suprised if they charged you $300.00

i could load it into my son's computer. i sure don't want to pay $300.
especially since i'll probably have to buy a new harddrive. i just dread dealing with this.

Here's a piece of advice I offer......

The reality is that hard drives are pretty darned cheap these days. Buy 2 and use one drive solely and only as a back up drive (whether you "shadow" your primary drive or use the 2nd drive in the windows backup process).

100 or so dollars in this way will save you $1000 worth of grief later...... voice of experience here, folks...

Agreed. It's almost unheard of not to be running a backup hard drive these days. Not to mention that even if your not computer savy, prices of external back up devices have come way down.

If the slave method doesn't work you will have to get it done by a pro. Try CompUSA.

i was able to boot with and recover using the ghost install disk.

also found out one of the cd/dvd drive was not working.
had to remove disc drive and was able to boot from the other cd/dvd drive.

i want to run a full scan, clean up the drive and then do a full backup.

probably was not as bad as i thought.

do you guys leave your computers on all the time? i had heard that shutting down and restarting them is what causes a lot of problems.

thanks for the input

If you are not using it, shut it down. The "shutting down/restarting causes problems" line is pretty much a myth. Even with virus protections and a firewall, I'd be a lot more concerned with someone hacking my system by leaving it on all the time (remember too, that it takes a fair amount of power to operate a computer).

UncleChris' rule 7 of computers..... You can't hack into a computer that is turned off. ;)
