Neil Patrick Harris apologizes for 'Live!' slur

You just know that Regis Philbin would never find himself in this kind of mess -- mainly because he probably doesn't know what a "******" is.

Neil Patrick Harris found himself in apology mode Friday, after catching flak for using the phrase "******" on Thursday's "Live! With Kelly."

"Truly sorry for saying the word '******' on Live this week. Twice!" Harris wrote on his Twitter account. "Should have been more thoughtful. Didn't at all mean to offend."

Dude, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs(Phillies AAA team) couldn't name their mascot Pork Chop because one, yes one, Puerto Rican guy said that it was his experience that pork chop was a slur against Puerto Ricans(to date, I've yet to find a single Puerto Rican who could corroborate this story).

Yeah, the PC crowd is just insane any more. I constantly mock that commercial that goes, 'you wouldn't call me a n---, you wouldn't call me a s---........and it's not okay to call me ********.' Okay, so I'm not going to go up to a ******** person and call them that, but I refuse to take the word out of my vocabulary. I'm not going to say, 'well, it was sad, but my friend's baby ended up with that debilitating illness that affects people both physically and mentally but we can't say how'. No, I'm going to say, 'well, it was sad, but my friend's baby ended up ********."

Sigh. Mentally ******** is, indeed, the proper diagnosis in the state of AZ. But, calling another person ******** is not very cool. Just saying. And you don't "end up" being ********. Either you are or you aren't. Sorry. Touchy subject with me since I teach those "retards" every day.

And, in this case, since you brought it up, it's not about being PC. It's about being compassionate.

We're not in disagreement about anything here. I wouldn't personally call another person ********. There's silly PC, but then there's just being a jerk. That would be being a jerk. I didn't mean that someone would 'end up' ******** as in get that way, but instead meant that example as their baby was born such. I know that it is a birth defect and not something someone can become. I simply meant that it is PC stupidity to come up with another way of referring to the deformity/defect when the simple term, used in a non-hurtful manner, is perfectly fine.

+1

There's using it while the person is present at them, which is beyond jerkish and always has been a no no.

Then theirs describing them to someone else and let's face it, it is what it is just like fat is fat, ugly is ugly and on and on and on.

Not saying it dosen't make it go away.

Gotta. Like I said, I am a little sensitive about it. Hate when people call someone "********" when the person isn't really ********. Really ticks me off.

Actually, they passed a law last year to change the language from "mentally ********" to "cognitive disability". Federally, though, any Medicaid statute for these folks still refers to them as "********". And you technically can become "********", so long as the disability manifests before your 18th birthday (according to AZ law). But yeah, I agree that ain't right to toss that word around any more than certain other slurs.

To elaborate, you can technically "end up" ******** because there are certain complications from illness that may cause a mental disability to manifest in an otherwise "normal" person. I know a family that had a "normal" son that lost all cognitive ability after complications that developed when he got the measles.

LOL. He must have been fat and didn't realize they were mocking his weight and not his ethnicity.

I think the same can be said about calling something, "gay."

I think you have to take context into account. "Gay" references can be used in quite lighthearted and fun ways, or they can be used to degrade ala Kobe Bryant.

It would be nice it the context was readily discernible by all. But, like intent, it's easy to misunderstand. Societally, I think we go way too far with all the PC crap but individually, I do my best to avoid the words that others might find injurious. It's tough to do sometimes though as many of these words have been in our everyday vocabulary for a long time and they didn't always carry such a negative connotation.

You are correct and I feel like an idiot for not remembering this. Kurt Warner mentioned that on facebook and people got nuts. They didn't understand the purpose of the change.

Not sure why my school is still using the MR classification of things. Probably has to do with Medicaid reimbursement.

I just really hate when someone insults another person by calling them "********" when the person clearly is not. (Not that's it's okay to do if the person is, indeed, ********.) I see what parents have to manage with these kids every day. It's not easy. People should be grateful that they have healthy families and think twice before throwing around a term that could be hurtful.

Just my opinion.

What insult should they use? Stupid? Because Stupid is offensive to stupid people.

My lady works in your field so I watch my language, just paying devils advocate. I dont care how people talk. Free country, free speech, have at it. Call me cracker or ****** all day. I dont really care.

Again, true. I think those are some of the saddest cases I see. You have a typical child til age two or three, and them a seizure happens or, like you mentioned, measles. Breaks your heart.

Autism often doesn't usually show up until age two or three as well, though Autism is a different classification than mental retardation.

How about if you a not sure ?

In all seriousness, there are times I am not quite sure.

I get that. My school has an adult vocational program and there are one or two people that work with the adult clients and I am still not sure if they were hired as employees or they were previously clients themselves. I just go about my business and don't address it unless there is a need to address it (which there never has been).

Not sure what sort of situation you are thinking about though.

I think the same can be said about calling something, "gay."

I thought about that when I typed my post. Almost mentioned it, but figured we already had enough balls in the air.

How about just being nice and not calling the person anything negative?

but we are talking a situation where the other person is being insulted so what is a proper word to insult with?

Should we change it to "my colleague, I must ask you to examine the lack of thought you placed into the motion you just conveyed as I dont think it resulted in an overall scope of who you are"?
