NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets have not had the kind of season they were hoping for when they began this campaign as one of the surprising teams in the NBA. While this has surely been a disappointing season for any Nets fan, Brooklyn has seen center Nic Claxton show off his range from three-point land and it seems like head coach Jordi Fernandez is okay with those shots.
"For sure. If he accomplishes all the shooting that we keep track, and his percentages meet our baselines, he's going to be able to shoot the same as everybody else," Fernandez said of Claxton prior to Wednesday's game against the Toronto Raptors. Claxton is coming off one of his more impressive games of the season in Monday's 120-101 loss to the Dallas Mavericks where he shot 2-of-2 from behind the three-point line.
"We've had rules that he should be comfortable with shooting threes at a certain time," Fernandez continued. "He did the other day, and I was happy for him that the ball went in. He works at it. Right now, the most important thing is that he's a good rim finisher, the mid-paint, how he can create maybe more assists, and then the free-throws. Whenever we get to the 3-point line, I'll be happy to discuss that."
Against the Mavericks, Claxton put up 19 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while showing his ability to score all over the floor, including the three-point line. Claxton hasn't been much of a shooter since coming into the NBA as the 31st overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft out of Georgia, but if he is able to reliably extend his range, he could be someone that opens up the floor for everyone.
"That's the work, the plan that we see and how we believe we can work together and help him," Fernandez explained. "He's doing a great job putting in the time, and the care factor is high. Again, I'm happy that those two shots went in."
