The Brooklyn Nets are in the beginning stages of the current rebuild following the franchise being unable to maximize the era of Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving a few years ago. Despite the fact that Brooklyn was criticized for not being able to do much winning during the Big 3 era, it seems like players still hold the organization in high regard.
In an anonymous player poll conducted by Sam Amick and Josh Robbins of The Athletic, 0.7% of the 137 players that casted a vote gave the Nets a tally in terms of being the best organization in the NBA. For context, the team with the largest percentage of votes in the category was the Golden State Warriors (21.9%), which makes sense given that they have been one of the best teams in the league over the past decade.
Brooklyn was in the tier of "other receiving votes," putting them in the same area as the Atlanta Hawks, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, and Portland Trail Blazers. In the article by Amick and Robbins explaining the findings, it was not made clear what the criteria was for what made an organization great, but the duo attempted to provide some context as to why players voted a certain way.
"Our polling indicates how closely players equate persistent losing to the quality of an organization — and, sometimes, how long it takes for perceptions to change," Amick and Robbins wrote during the section of how players voted for the worst organization in the NBA. The Nets have not won a championship since coming to the NBA, but they have made it to the playoffs 24 times, including in five of the last seven seasons.
Ultimately, it seems like there are multiple factors that go into how players view teams across the league, but given that the Warriors, Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, and Miami Heat make up the top-5, it's evident that players view winning in high regard. Brooklyn will not be ready to be a playoff-level team for the next few years, but players still believe in what the organization can do based off recent memory.
In The Athletic's NBA player poll, here are the results related to the #Nets:
- Cam Johnson received votes for most underrated player.
- Brooklyn received votes for best organization.
- 2.7% of players polled voted Jordi Fernandez as the worst HC.https://t.co/OoYfKHkK3u
