I am having bizarre issues with my desktop. I have no problem accessing the internet but other types of traffic don't work:
1) Creative MediaSource: when I try to use CDDB to get song information it doesn't load and get a "Socket open failed"
2) My school provides cable over the LAN (IPTV). The software client can't connect to the server.

Both of the above applications work perfectly on my laptop. The settings in the Local Area Connection Properties are identical. Windows Firewall and other firewalls are off. Both computers have XP Home SP2 installed.

My question is: What kind of setting/driver could cause this problem? I am getting annoyed because my computer has TV out and I want to watch cable on my TV and not the puny laptop screen.

Are you running a local router? If so you need to enable the TCP ports that those services run on
