Massachusetts native Bill Chisholm is set to become the next owner of the Boston Celtics after agreeing to purchase the NBA's winningest franchise for a record $6.1 billion. The league's Board of Governors will need to approve the deal before it is finalized.

Chisholm is a native of Georgetown, MA and went to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. His new group will become the majority owner of the team. He's joined by current Celtics minority owner Robert Hale, the president of Related Companies Bruce Beal Jr., and the global investment firm Sixth Street. Current team governor Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain in a leadership role with the team until the sale is completed in 2028.

Grousbeck outlined the plan for his involvement with the team in a press release shortly after the news was announced. He outlined why Chisholm is hoping to make a smooth transition into his role as majority owner.

"He has asked me to run the team as CEO and Governor for the first three years, and stay on as his partner, and I am glad to do so," Grousbeck said."

Chisholm will indeed become the governor of the team when the last leg of the sale is finalized. He is the co-founder of Symphony Technology Group in California, but has roots in the area. In the same press release, Chisholm outlined his goals for purchasing the team.

“Growing up on the North Shore and attending college in New England, I have been a die-hard Celtics fan my entire life,” said Chisholm. “I understand how important the Celtics are to the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different than any other city in the country. I also understand that there is a responsibility as a leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am up for this challenge.”

“My partners and I have immense respect for Wyc, the entire Grousbeck family and their indelible contributions to the Celtics organization over the last 23 years," Chisholm continued. "We look forward to learning from Wyc and partnering with Brad Stevens, Joe Mazzulla and the talented team and staff to build upon their success as we work to bring more championships home to Boston.”

According to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach, who first reported the sale of the news, Chisholm plans to buy a house in Boston so he can attend as many Celtics games as possible. Himmelsbach also reported Chisholm is known to have deep knowledge of the team.

The Celtics are the defending champions of the NBA. They will look to repeat this spring with the playoffs around the corner, while questions about the team's massive salary obligations remain.
