"Bobcats hope to grow with Okafor
Florida Today reports that the Bobcats have extended an offer to the Magic for the No. 1 overall pick. It includes shipping the team's own No. 4 pick along with the team's top player in the expansion draft to Orlando. The Bobcats covet Emeka Okafor and want to build their team around him. "

Wow, a guy undersized at center with acknowledged back problems! You want to build your franchise around him? How about a sign and trade with the lakers for your #4 pick and get Kobe? Or anyone for that matter? Hell, pull off a Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnette trade and that's worth talking about! If I am the Magic, I say who I want in the draft and go for it! :hulk:

You'll see how undersized Okafor is when he's changing games with his D.

He's definitely an intriguing player who will help any team he's on.

Orlando won't do this. Thy're not going to take on anybody else's baggage.

Part of it would technically have to be a verbal agreement, but what if the Bobcats offered to take on Grant Hill's contract as part of a large swap?

Essentially they are saying that Orlando could take anyone they want from the expansion draft, but I don't see how that would really work since the magic are right at the salary cap.

For a sample its being reported that Brian Grant is available in the expansion draft. Unless they lift the trade rules for the expansion draft Charlotte could not send Orlando Brian Grant and aircraft take for the #1 draft pick. It would put the magic way over the salary cap.

But if the Bobcats took Grant Hill, only to cut him, but then traded their #4 for the Magic #1 with the Magic throwing in a pile of money; then the Magic could accept another player in the exchange like Brian Grant. Mind you, it would have to be A LOT OF MONEY.

George, I think your brain may have turned off for a few minutes there. :) You know as well as anybody that they can only send $3 million cash in a trade. That hardly puts a dent in the $47 million in Grant Hill is owed over the next three seasons.

Well, they are limited to 3 million cash per trade right?

So they could offer 3 million cash when the Cats took Hill, and another 3 million when they trade picks.

At that point, it would be better for the Magic if they just swapped picks, and didn't pick up Grant. I think they would do:

#1
Grant Hill
6 million total cash

for

#4

There isn't a limit to how much cash they can do in a time frame is there??

What if the Bobcats take him, and hope he doesn't play again. His contract is relatively close to coming off the books if he doens't play anymore. Then insurance would pick up most of the money......

Seems like a big gamble though.

The 3 million dollar bribe only works for the Expansion draft. In regular trades however there is a 1 million dollar maximum that can be sent via trade

From Larry Coon's FAQ

81. Can cash be included as part of a trade package?
Players can be traded for cash, and cash can be included in trade packages. The amount of cash is limited to $3 million. The cash is NOT considered when matching salaries under the assigned player exception.

CHA would consider any deal involving Hill ONLY IF this scenario is realistic.

Agreed. There have been reports that a handful of teams have asked about him lately (usually in a package that includes the #1). Presumably most of those teams would be banking on his retirement....

Grant Hill was supposed to be ready to make a comeback this fall. At least he was going to attempt to comeback. I don't think there's any way Charlotte would take him unless he retired and the doctor said he just could not play. Even if $6 million in cash they would still be left with $41 million to pay if he could play or messed up that medical retirement.

I really don't think anybody is going to touch Hill. That whole situation is such a mess. There has not to be a better way to deal with that.
