Dennis Green.

He was spurned by the Niners last year because they wanted a complete break from anyone who had coached under Bill Walsh. This is his chance to show them that they made a mistake.

Coached SF quarterbacks and receivers from '86-'88.
Wants some personnel power, and this just in.... he should get it.

Eight playoff appearances, four division titles and two NFC championship games appearances in ten years with SEVEN different quarterbacks. Dangle one of the two rookie QB's in front of him and he might be all over it. One will be there. Hell, they might BOTH be there.

$3-4M per year should do it.

Dennis

Green was pretty aloof when talking about the Cards opening.....of course this was about 5 minutes before the official announcement.

One good thing was that he didn't say "I'm not looking to coach again" or Arizona sucks. He did say his family was very happy in San Diego and that it would take quite an offer.

Okay, we've got the drumroll and the punchline, do we get the cymbal crash now, too?

Just kidding. I'd live to see Denny Green as the next HC. I just don't think we'll get him. Too many other offers, too much money, not enough going for us.

That's telling. Has there been an announcement about SD's coaching situation? I know Marty is "at risk," but haven't heard anything definitive.

Green could do some great things in SD.

Schottenheimer will be back in S.D. next year. It was announced last week.

Much going for us. Top two quarterback in the draft. The next Jerry Rice at WR. A young nucleus for the most part locked up.
A franchise eager to listen to a quality head coaches ideas...

I guess I meant from a historical/outsider's aspect. Arizona's not the most storied franchise (insert "master of the obvious" picture here). In Chicago you've got a sold out stadium with rabid fans, in Buffallo you have a not so distant perrenial-playoff past, Oakland is one year removed from a Superbowl appearence, etc...

I'm not bashing--I think we DO have a lot going for us, but I don't know if anyone can be convinced we have more going for us then, say, Chicago.

I also think we have a good young group who plays hard but needs better direction. I would be all for either Fassell
or Green. I do not want to go the ex-cordinator again.

I think it will be Green. On todays ESPN Monday Morning QB show he looked like the cat who ate the canary when they were discussing Mac and the AZ coaching situation. I think Dennis already knows.

Just a canary? So he's lost weight--I haven't seen him in a while. He usually looks like the cat who ate the Chistmas turkey.

Okay guys, I just got back from Next Monday, January 5th, 2004.

I got my machine to work one last time. We hired Dennis Greene as coach!! WOOOPEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And let me say this - his choice of Off Coord is very intriguing!

I want everyone to know that that reality has a + / - effect of 2% divergence from this worldline

Did you happen to notice what the NFL scores were when you were "away"?

Have Green and Graves worked together any place before?

Graves worked in the Bears organization for 10 years before coming to AZ, I would be surprised if he and Green haven't had some dealings when Green was at Minnesota.

I wouldn't hire Green. To me it's like hiring a slightly different version of Buddy Ryan.

In 1995, Green was accused of sexually harrassing women associated with the team. Green denied any wrongdoing and he and the team refused to confirm a settlement.

Two years later he published an autobiography with a chapter that appears to threaten a lawsuit for controlling interest.

His teams lacked discipline full of problem players like Underwood and Moss.

I fully expect Graves not to like Green and make it a non-issue they just seem to be different kind of guys.

I think that both he and the team have an interest in each other that is real but during the interview something weill cause him to show his true colors and to me Rod Graves would be a tough guy to fool but that is just my opinion.

I don't know how Jim Johnson will interview he is over 60 and never had a NFL head coaching gig but if any of the applicants is smart they will listen to the press conference and come in with a plan and a list that is general enough not to give away trade secrets but specific enough to get the point across and to hammer away at the issues Rod and Mike B covered.

Discipline, plan and personell.

Some guy will be bright enough to lay out a very detailed plan that will roll right up Rod and Mikes alley and sell himself to them and I don't think Green will be that guy.

Underwood was crazy. Discipline can't cure craziness. Green will get us in the play-offs. Mike and Graves will deal with the discipline. Green produces wins. That's what we should look for in a coach. I no longer care about having 53 upstanding losers to cheer for. I want winners. Obviously not winner rapists and car-jackers, but average human winners.

I just love how people pretend to know everything that's going to happen in a draft that's over 4 months away.

Green to me equals a good marketing move in the short term and I would venture to say he gets us to the playoffs but after that I see him reaching a plateu and then eroding from there.

Johnson to me is the one I like just because he is old and because he is great at what he does. Young players respond to age like that if the guy knows what he is doing they will listen. Just depends on if he has the stuff to be a real HC.

HUH?

Isn't that one of the main reasons Mac got his "walking papers"?

Not that he had the type of discipline problems that Green did in Minnesota, because Mac, Graves, and "the Bidwills" have made "character" a top priority.
But if the head coach can't "discipline" his team....why should he be retained if someone else has to "babysit" for him??????

BTW...I agree Demetrius Underwood has some serious mental problems. (and has for quite some time). If Green were such a wonderful "evaluator of talent", why did he draft him in the first place?
