The 2025 NFL Draft isn’t set in stone just yet. A new report from ESPN indicates that we could see some trades in the top three, which could change things up for the New England Patriots.
According to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants have received calls about their top-three draft picks. Schrager notes that "neither team is outwardly rejecting those overtures."
The report adds some intrigue to an NFL Draft picture that appeared to crystallize in recent weeks. The Tennessee Titans are expected to take Miami quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1. Meanwhile, most mock drafts have the Browns taking CB/WR Travis Hunter at No. 2. At that point, the Giants are often projected to take pass rusher Abdul Carter at No. 3.
That scenario would leave the Patriots in a spot where the two perceived elite prospects are off the board. In that case, the popular pick would be for New England to take LSU tackle Will Campbell at No. 4.
But it’s possible a trade could throw a wrench into that projection.
Scharger reports that teams inquiring about the top three picks have been asking about Hunter, Carter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
It’s entirely possible a team trades up to take Hunter or Carter. Not much would change at that point. But if someone moves up to take Jeanty, then the Patriots could have one of this year’s top two prize picks fall into their laps.
Don’t count out a trade involving the Patriots, either. MassLive’s Mark Daniels reports that New England isn’t opposed to moving from the No. 4 pick. If someone comes up with an enticing offer, the Patriots could move down.
At this point, it’s all speculation. But it’s a changeup from a draft that’s been a little stagnant in recent weeks.
