The New Orleans Saints selected Virginia Cavaliers defensive back Jonas Sanker with the No. 93 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, going with back-to-back defensive players in the third round.
People that wanted explosive picks like wide receiver, running back or tight end will still be very mad about this one. However, this is another one that makes sense. Sanker is a versatile defensive back that can do it all and could potentially contribute from day one.
Sanker had at least 500 career snaps at three different snaps in college. He spent 961 in the box, 573 over the top as a free safety and then 735 as a nickel corner. His role shifted more towards safety as a senior, but he still moved all over.
In coverage, he had two interceptions with 15 passes broken up. He is better in man than zone right now, but is all-around solid. What is most fun about his addition to this Brandon Staley defense is his fit in the run game. He is aggressive and hits hard, which could make him perfect to place in that slot at times.
It isn’t the cornerback that seemed like New Orleans might have needed a little bit more, but this is a fun add to the defensive back room. Safety should be a strength again with Sanker, Justin Reid and Tyrann Mathieu.
Draft Grade: B+
