Draft rumors

Among the teams looking to move up? The Blazers, Grizzlies, Jazz and Suns have been the most active according to sources. The Nuggets, Suns and Mavs have been trying to acquire another pick, as well. Who's listening? The Raptors, Heat, Bucks, Knicks and Wizards all would move down, if they could get a solid veteran to help them win right away.

The word at the camp was that Brazilian big man Anderson Varejao will withdraw his name from the draft. Varejao's stock took a dive after limited playing time at the Euroleague final four. Playoff commitments to F.C. Barcelona kept Varejao from coming to the U.S. to work out.

Rumors that Pavel Podkolzine's workout on Friday was well choreographed to hide the player's lack of speed couldn't be further from the truth. Someone is talking the player down in hopes he slips in the draft. Pavel got off the plane from Italy on Thursday afternoon and arrived at Gold Coast Multiplex around 5 p.m. He met coach Billy Bayno for the first time there. Bayno ran him through drills, once, for about an hour, just to get a feel for what he could do. The workout on Friday was only the second time the two had ever met. Pavel ran the floor very well both days. How do I know? I was at both workouts and spent much of the evening with Pavel on Thursday. Teams that I talked to after the workout where shocked at how athletic he looked.

There's a rumor floating around that Zarko Cabarkapa got a promise from the Suns he'd be the No. 17 pick in the draft. This one is probably bogus. It started when Cabarkapa suddenly left the U.S., after only two workouts, to go home to Yugoslavia. Some teams assumed he quit working out because he cut a deal. Not true, according to Zarko's representatives and the Suns. Zarko's mother had a medical emergency, and he quickly flew back during the dead week of the Chicago camp to be with his mother. He'll be back in the U.S. early next week and begin working out again.

A similar rumor is floating around about Brazil's Leandrinho Barbosa, who canceled a workout claiming he had a pulled hip flexor. Several teams immediately assumed a team had locked him up. Again, untrue. Barbosa's agent, Michael Coyne told Insider the injury was real, and it is pretty much healed. He'll be back on the workout circuit again by midweek.

I have a very hard time believing the Suns would have made a promise that early. In fact I don't believe it at all. I read somewhere this morning that the Suns worked out Brian Cook in Chicago and were quite impressed.

It would be nice if the Suns could get another draft pick because it looks like this could be a deeper draft than usual. A high second-round draft pick could probably get a nice bench contributor or nice upside player.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Really the only tradeable veteran is Outlaw. I doubt the Suns would trade Joe Johnson just to move up in the draft, and probably neither Tsakalidis nor Jacobsen has much trade value right now.

I can imagine a trade along the lines of this:

Team A gets
Bo Outlaw
A draft pick, either this year's #17 or a future one

Phoenix gets
A higher pick in the upcoming draft
An undesireable, but not too large, filler contract

So who are the candidates for the filler contract?

Toronto: Lamond Murray -- unlikely due to health issues; if he is healthy, he's probably too good a player for the Raptors to give up so easily

Miami: no one

Milwaukee: Ervin Johnson -- hmm, I can see the Suns doing this

New York: Travis Knight -- ugh, this would be terrible, but at least he'd be on the books for only one year

Washington: Jahidi White -- one hopes the Suns would not be this desperate

Washington again: Christian Laettner...

Hmm. I really don't like Laettner's attitude, but he is the kind of player the Suns like to hook up with -- soft, white, and a decent shooter. He could back up all three front-court positions (since the Suns play small ball). I can't say I'd be too surprised if the Suns made a trade to get him.

The simplest would be Outlaw and the #17 (and maybe a future pick as well) for Laettner and the #10. Those salaries would line up just fine.

Hmm. Whether I could stomach that trade would depend a lot on what kind of player the Suns got at #10.

So do I. But it's funny -- several days before last year's draft, a rumor started circulating that the Suns had promised Stoudemire they'd take him at #9. I didn't pay much attention to it, but then when they ended up selecting him after all, it made me wonder.

Maybe the Suns are trying to inflate Cabarkapa's stock, so that he'll go higher and a different player will fall to them? The Suns wouldn't be breaking a promise if Cabarkapa is gone by the time their pick comes up.

No way that WAS would trade down 7 spots for Bo Outlaw.
They have the bigger and younger version of Bo Outlaw in Etan Thomas.

It seems to be very very unlikely that Suns will be able to move up in the draft.

You're saying that Etan Thomas is just like Bo Outlaw? Can Thomas change the complexion of a game like Bo can (defensively)?

Both Thomas and Outlaw are defensive role players without offesnive talents.
Thomas is bigger and a better rebounder because of his size and Outlaw is more mobile.

There are really few things what Outlaw can bring on the table and Thomas can't.

Actually I do not think that WAS would move down even one spot in the 1st round because of the Laettner/Outlaw swap.

I agree about Laettner/Outlaw, but I find it hard to believe that Etan Thomas can disrupt a game as well as Bo can. Granted, I rarely see Thomas because he doesn't get any time--perhaps that should tell you something as well... :D

Here is an question from Ford's chat about the suns and ebi

David (New Orleans): What is the buzz about Ebi the Arizona recruit after the Chicago camp? Can Cats fans look forward to seeing him in a Zona uniform or is he gone for the pros?

Chad Ford: Everyone seems convinced that Ebi is the Suns guy at No. 17. If that's true, he'll stay in the draft. Why does everyone think that? GM Bryan Colangelo blamed me at the pre-draft camp. I had Ebi at No. 17 in my first mock draft. No one else had Ebi in the first round and people started making connections. They do like him, but I don't think they've promised him anything. The great thing about the Suns is they have total flexibility this year. They have young players at every position and can afford to develop someone. Ebi would be a lottery pick if he spent two years in college.
