Combine Rumors, News and Notes

Feb 20, 2004

By Lane Adkins

The NFL Combines in Indianapolis provides General Manager’s, coaches, players and agents the close format to often discuss potential deals. Much like let us make a deal, the frenzy can start with the slightest slip of the tongue.

Only a couple days into the combine event and rumors are circulating about possible player movement and some very early draft discussions.

At every turn, the opportunity to catch a team representative presents itself, but you had better be quick and know how to make a point very quickly. These team representatives do not expound much time on small talk, they are too busy getting onto the next player and obtaining crucial reports on any specific player.

However, where there are these team representatives, there is sure to be some talk. Gossip abounds in Indianapolis today, some of which may be too far-fetched for belief; other tales just pave the way for future discussion.

One aspect of the NFL combine achieves is, every team will leave Indianapolis with something to ponder, whether it is about a college player or a move in free agency, the NFL combine is a brewing pot for the off-season activities for an NFL team.

The RCA Dome is a busy place.

It did not take long for whispers to be heard in Indianapolis. It is rumor season and this is some of what has been making the rounds at the NFL combine.

Representatives for the Miami Dolphins are inquiring into the availability and parameters of a deal for quarterback Drew Henson of the Houston Texans.

The Washington Redskins have stated they will not trade quarterback Patrick Ramsey, but league sources gathered in Indianapolis insist the Redskins are quietly stirring the trade-pot to generate additional interest in the two-year veteran. We have heard the Dolphins, Browns, Packers, and Chargers all have inquired about Ramsey or Washington cornerback Champ Bailey.

The Cleveland Browns have conducted some briefs discussions with the Redskins. Bailey has been discussed, but we are hearing the Browns have also shown an interest in Ramsey.

Matt Millen of the Detroit Lions has stated while in Indianapolis that the Lions will not be a dealing partner with the Washington Redskins for Bailey until the Redskins lower their asking price of one first and one second-round in the upcoming draft for Bailey.

The Dallas Cowboys, looking for a running back to replace Troy Hambrick have spent a good portion of the combine watching and talking to the draft eligible backs. In addition, rumors are prevalent that the Cowboys have shown an interest in Cleveland running back William Green and Cincinnati’s Corey Dillon.

The Denver Broncos are rumored to be the front-runner to sign Canadian Football League standout, quarterback Ricky Ray.

With the Indianapolis Colts reducing their salary cap number by restructuring contracts, in their quest to sign free agent quarterback Peyton Manning to a new, long-term deal, the Colts may be willing to listen to offers for running back Edgerrin James.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quietly have been in continuous contact with the Houston Texans about Drew Henson. Lurking in the background, the Steelers may become a serious player.

Arizona Cardinals are looking for a veteran QB to compete for the starting spot. Contrary to speculation coming from reports in Cleveland, the Cardinals have not discussed a deal with the Browns for quarterback Tim Couch.

The Carolina Panthers are working hard to resign restricted free agent wide receiver Steve Smith prior to the free agency signing period. According to a team source in Indianapolis, talks with representatives are ongoing and both sides appear poised that a deal will be struck.

Team representatives, including assistant coaches for the Dallas Cowboys are spending a significant amount of time scouting/talking with offensive line prospects. The Dallas contingents appeared to lock-on to Vernon Carey, Sean Locklear, and Jacob Rogers.

Representatives for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, and Kansas City Chiefs are poised to have lengthy discussions with North Carolina State quarterback Phillip Rivers. The Steelers and Dolphins expressed a significant amount of interest in the signal-caller at the Senior Bowl in January.

The Washington Redskins are believed to be heading into discussions with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday regarding the status of Bengals running back Corey Dillon.

The Oakland Raiders have opened up contract talks with free agent cornerback Charles Woodson. The Raiders would like to retain Woodson.

Buffalo Bills cornerback Antoine Winfield will enter the free agent player signing period with both barrels loaded. Winfield, longing for a promised long-term deal from the Bills is ready to experience free agency, as the Bills have not seriously discussed a long-term plan to keep him in Buffalo. The free agent market at the cornerback position is exceptional this off-season, and Winfield ranks close to the top of the list.

Rueben Brown, the long-time starting guard of the Bills will not be with the team in 2004, according to league sources at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. According to the source, the Bills front office is of the belief Brown is highly overrated and compensated, while not bringing a positive influence to the organization.

Wide receiver Roy Williams from the University of Texas has impressed many NFL team personnel evaluators with his tremendous receiving skills, route running ability, and speed/quickness for a man his size. Williams, was considered the number-one wide receiver prospect for the upcoming draft until Pittsburgh’s Larry Fitzgerald declared recently. Seven teams have already spoken with Williams at the combine, including representatives from the Dallas Cowboys, Green Packers, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins.

The Detroit Lions are expected to bring in San Francisco free agent wide receiver Tai Streets and Darren Jackson of the Seattle Seahawks shortly after the free agent signing period begins on March 3rd.

COMBINE NOTES
By Allen Trieu

Here are some notes and numbers I picked up at the combine today, mostly from player interviews. More coming in the next few days. Sunday will be a big day as top prospect including Reggie Williams and Lee Evans will run 40s.

Chris Perry
Talked a lot about his versatility. Will not work out here and will instead workout at the pro day at Michigan. Has talked informally with the Giants, Bengals and Packers.

Michael Turner
Looked very built. Measured in at 5’10, 237. Has only met with one team and that was the Detroit Lions. Spoke at length about the perception of the MAC and how he was not heavily publicized as a senior. Also talked about how UNI was the only school to offer a scholarship out of high school.

Kevin Jones
Will not participate here because of advice from his agent.

Steven Jackson
Big Steve came in at 6'1 1/2, 241. He said he hopes to run mid-4.4s but won't run here.

Mewelde Moore
Measured at 5’10 ½, and 209. Made sure everyone knew that baseball was no longer an option. He also reiterated that his left hand was fine. Has been training at Cornerstone with Keith Bell. Will run 40 and do everything here except lift but will lift at his pro day. Has talked to four teams, Green Bay, Atlanta, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay.

Nick Leckey
Measured in at 6’2 1/2, 290 lbs, was interviewed by the Steelers.

Steelers have shown interest in Champ Bailey, but Detroit is considered the frontrunner for him.

Tony Pape
Very well spoken “media darling.” Measured in at 6’6, 322 and says he did 28 reps but only 26 got counted.

Lousaka Polite
Measured in at 5’11 ½, 246. Will run here and is aiming at 4.5s but says he’s been consistently in the low 4.6s. Looked impressive and is slowly becoming the top Fullback prospect.

Shawntae Spencer
Is not here but reports have him at 6’2, 178 with his forty time in the low 4.3s. Will run at Pittsburgh’s pro day.

Jeb Terry
Measured in at 6’5 ½, 313 did 27 reps on the bench.

Devard Darling
Will run 40 here. Did not get numbers on him.

Fred Russell
Measured in at 5’7, 195. Will do everything here. When asked about stats for his last year, he replied, “I don’t remember, Big Ten hits will make you forget a lot.”

Larry Fitzgerald
Very impressive interview. Was very well spoken and showed the character that has been well publicized. Measured at 6’2 ¾, 225 lbs. Also said he began the year at 210 and by the end of the season was playing at 230. Spoke at great length about being the Vikings ball boy and the possibility of being reunited with Dennis Green in Arizona. Will not work out here.

Reggie Williams
Looked very large. Measured in at 6’4, 231. Surprisingly will do all drills here and will run on Sunday.

Ben Roethlisberger
Big Ben measured in as expected, 6’5, 241.

Eli Manning
Manning came in at 6’4 ½, 222.

Jared Lorenzen
Measured in at 6’3, 280 but didn’t necessarily look any bigger than he did throughout the season.

Shawn Andrews
Admitted he was over 400 at one point. Down to 366 now but still looked a bit soft.

Stacy Andrews
Conversely, Stacy looked as big as his brother but was much more solid. He is a player who is really making some noise here and is moving up boards.

Jeff Smoker
Spoke a lot about the off-field issues. Measured at 6’3, 223. No forty here but will run at his pro day.

Cody Pickett
Looked very big. Measured at 6’3 ½, 233 lbs. About 15 lbs heavier than his playing weight. Both him and Reggie Williams seemed bigger than usual…something’s going on up in Washington! Pickett said he will do all tests and drills here.

Devery Henderson
Measured in at 5’11, 198. Will not run here but rather at his pro day on March 18. Said his fastest so far is 4.26.

Rashaun Woods
6’2, 202, nice to see him add a little bulk.

Roy Williams
Measured at 6’2 1/2, 212. A little shorter and a little lighter than expected.

Darius Watts
Measured 6’1, 188. Will not do anything here. Said he wants to work on strength a lot.

Philip Rivers
6’5, 229. Denver and San Diego have shown interest. Not doing anything here.

Derrick Hamilton
6’3, 196. Thinks he’ll mid-4.3s but won’t run here. Will do WR drills though. Talked at length about his versatility and ability to make people miss despite his height/wiry frame.

James Newson
Came in at 6’0, 213. I jokingly asked him if he could match his 99 speed rating in Madden. He said we’ll have to wait and see but the game doesn’t measure heart baby! Has been training with Charles Collins at Phenom Factor. Will run Sunday.

Quincy Wilson
5’9, 225 with some of the biggest calves I’ve ever seen. Talked a lot about the Miami game and how he did more than just the one big run in that game.

Matt Schaub
6’5 ¾, 243, a little taller than advertised. Will do everything here. Talked about his lack of being sacked this year and his quick release. Said he's been compared to Chad Pennington and Brad Johnson.

Rod Rutherford
6’1 ½, 240 - compared himself to McNair. Said he doesn’t mind being called Slash and will “do what he has to to get on the field,” but definitely likes being a QB.

Ernest Wilford
6’3 ½, 226, will do everything here. Looked like a TE, Baltimore and Cincinnati have talked to him about playing TE depending on his 40. Interviewed very well and had a pretty good sense of humor and take on the Frank Beamer slap to the helmet.
Best DB he’s faced: DeAngelo Hall
NFL WR he compares to best: Terrell Owens
How he will impress scouts: charm and good looks

Hopefully the Cards won't give up draft picks to acquire Couch cause we need all the draft picks we need.

Is everything
I was hoping Green Bay would get Couch just so we could hear the announcers say... "Couch dumps the ball to Davenport."

No way they trade Couch now that Holcomb is out for 6 months. They will rather draft a QB than trade the only proven QB in their depth chart.

Your heading states - "News/Rumors from Indy Incl. Cards QB interest ."

Though technically accurate, your heading (because of the context of the Combine) implies that the Cards are interested in drafting a QB, But there's nothing in the article to suggest the Cards are interested in drafting a QB, but suggests instead that they're trolling for a vet, but haven't discussed Couch.

A rumor I heard is that the NFL is discussing about going to a practice squad of 7 players and also having a designated QB and Special Teams player listed as active on game day. That basicaly means teams will have 47 active players instead of the current 45 plus the 3rd QB

In partial acknowledgement to Mike Sherman's request for a Special Teams Player on game day the NFL is thinking about going to a 47 player active squad on Sunday's.

That might help more 3rd string QBs like Parsons, etc.. get some playing time, while now the 3rd string QB can only get playing time when the starting QB and BAckup QB are injured.
